Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Job Description
Plans, organizes and coordinates the hazardous materials and processes, safety, compliance and monitoring activities to ensure the safety of the university community. This includes providing consultation and guidance, conducting audits and facility inspections, conducting training, data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation steps or improvements. Serves as a technical advisor.
Responsibilities
- Conducts site visits to audit, provide consultation and inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials including: biological, chemical, lasers, and radiological materials, to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
- Develops and implements pollution prevention programs and sustainability activities to support university goals.
- Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and key performance indicators for the department including the effectiveness of safety education.
- Investigates and remediates problems with the safe and legal handling of hazardous materials.
- Trains staff to take measurements and prepares required reports for tracking, decision-making and/or compliance requirements.
- Operates specialized equipment used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
- Ensures accurate inventory and accuracy of storage management systems for hazardous materials such as biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances.
- Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in federal, state and industry regulations and requirements.
- Develops pollution prevention and sustainability education programs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of chemistry, hazardous materials, inventory management, monitoring equipment, and response procedures to investigate incidents, monitor a variety of situations, maintain records and generate reports.
- Knowledge of modern radiation principles related to the recognition, prevention and control of radiation health hazards both ionizing and non-ionizing.
- Knowledge of the function of an academic research laboratory.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal/regulations for hazardous materials/waste and environmental sampling.
- Knowledge of biosafety and biosecurity inspection requirements.
- Knowledge of chemical compatibility and hazard classes.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials management practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of requirements governing the safe use of radioactive materials.
- Skill in interpreting and applying, federal, state, and local biosafety laws and regulations. Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.
- Skill in maintaining effective working relationships.
- Skill in data analysis Skill in accident investigation and analysis.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience leading or contributing to safety initiatives that improved efficiency or reduced risk.
- Effective communication skills with experience providing safety guidance, training, and mentoring to lab personnel in compliance with environmental health and safety regulations.
Salary Range
$67,000 to $70,000 per year
Driving Requirement
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
