Setting: Skilled Nursing Facility / Long-Term Care

Position Summary

The RN Unit Manager is responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, and delivery of nursing care on an assigned unit. This role ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, staff performance, and positive clinical outcomes while promoting a safe and supportive environment for residents and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical & Resident Care

  • Oversees and coordinates all nursing care for residents on assigned unit

  • Conducts comprehensive resident assessments and participates in care planning

  • Ensures accurate and timely documentation in accordance with facility policy and regulations

  • Monitors residents for changes in condition and initiates appropriate interventions

  • Reviews medication administration and treatment records for accuracy and compliance

  • Participates in admissions, discharges, and transfers

Leadership & Staff Management

  • Supervises, mentors, and evaluates nursing staff (LPNs, CNAs)

  • Ensures adequate staffing and assists with scheduling as needed

  • Provides ongoing education, coaching, and corrective action when necessary

  • Promotes teamwork, accountability, and professional nursing standards

  • Participates in hiring, orientation, and performance evaluations

Regulatory & Quality Assurance

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (CMS, DOH)

  • Prepares for and participates in surveys, audits, and inspections

  • Implements corrective action plans related to survey findings

  • Monitors quality indicators, incident reports, and infection control practices

  • Participates in QA/QAPI meetings and initiatives

Communication & Collaboration

  • Acts as liaison between residents, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team

  • Communicates effectively with DON/ADON regarding unit operations and concerns

  • Addresses resident and family concerns promptly and professionally

  • Participates in care conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings

Qualifications

  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment

  • Minimum 1–2 years of nursing experience in long-term care or skilled nursing

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of LTC regulations and clinical standards

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills

  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift per facility requirements

  • May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts

  • Exposure to healthcare environment with potential infectious diseases
