Position Overview

RN Team Lead – Pulmonary Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at 1906 Belleview Ave SE, Roanoke.

Responsible for leading a 20‑bed progressive care unit that primarily serves medical patients, with a significant focus on pulmonary and respiratory conditions, within a Magnet designation environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the team leader, clinical resource, role model, coach, and facilitator for staff and department operations.
  • Lead the work group, resolve routine issues, foster a positive and productive work environment, and support fiscally responsible operations.
  • Maintain awareness of organizational initiatives and incorporate applicable practices into the work unit.
  • Refer complex or sensitive issues—such as compensation, staffing, working conditions, hiring, or formal corrective action—to the manager/director.
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients of all ages within the assigned area: assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Utilize leadership principles to mobilize the patient care team toward positive outcomes and follow up on issues to ensure successful resolution.
  • Assist the manager/director in ensuring staff competence and supporting staff performance development.
  • Identify areas for improvement and contribute to developmental plans for team members.
  • Provide regular coaching and feedback, maintain performance-related documentation, prepare performance assessments, and communicate team member performance to leadership.
  • Assist with or prepare work schedules, ensuring adequate coverage, equitable staffing, and control of work hours.
  • Manage routine clinical or operational issues and notify leadership as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with management on fiscal stewardship, including resource allocation, staffing decisions, budget input, and expense control.
  • Support departmental initiatives such as patient satisfaction improvement, performance improvement activities, and other quality initiatives.
  • Conduct individual and team meetings, ensuring effective two‑way communication; keep staff informed, listen to concerns, resolve issues, promote a positive work environment.
  • Encourage accountability, professionalism, and development of interpersonal and communication skills among staff.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, licensure, and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CLIA, COLA, OSHA, AAAHC).

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or diploma in nursing from a State Board of Nursing‑approved program.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the clinical discipline with demonstrated clinical and leadership expertise.
  • Registered Nurse licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification (C‑EFM) may be required as determined by the department.
  • AHA BLS‑HCP required; ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP may be required based on the specific work unit.
  • Effective leadership, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate, and coordinate care and operational workflows.
  • Ability to coach staff, participate in performance evaluations, and support operational and quality initiatives.
  • Professionalism, accountability, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
