Description:The emergency room sees all types of patients.Patients range from newborns to the elderly with a wide variety of complaints.Conditions treated include both minor illnesses and critically ill patients.Nurses are expected to manage critically ill patients and those in cardiac arrest.Common cases include strokes and heart attacks.Patients classified as Level 1 or 2 trauma are cared for in specialized trauma bays.Nurses will care for trauma patients after they have been stabilized.It is essential for candidates to be proficient in titrating various IV drips.This includes working with vasopressor drips, cardiac drips, and antihypertensive drugs.Patient-to-nurse ratios are variable based on acuity, typically 1:3-5.Nurses will work under the oversight of a minimum of three attending physicians.There are two charge nurses on each shift to assist with departmental needs.A house supervisor is available 24/7 for additional support.Emergency department technicians are available to assist with non-nursing tasks.Nursing staff are required to interpret cardiac rhythms and act accordingly.All nurses should be capable of recognizing life-threatening rhythms.Phlebotomy and nursing staff share the responsibility for drawing labs.Scheduling involves 12-hour shifts that may rotate on weekends and holidays.Every nurse is expected to fulfill weekend and holiday requirements based on the departmental needs.There is no call requirement for this position.Traveling nurses may occasionally be floated to assist on other units.Nurses are permitted to wear tasteful scrubs and solid colors underneath.
