Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication (careful checking of dosages and avoiding interactions), starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines for fluids, medications, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; observing the patient and recording observations; and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN educates patients and families on illness or injury management, post-treatment and home care needs; diet, nutrition, exercise programs; and self-administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate. The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hires and students, and helps staff and students complete tasks required to achieve competency. The RN continues to enhance their knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems as required. The RN may continue to improve patient outcomes.

Essential Functions

• Possess knowledge of how to collect health data in a systematic and ongoing manner, prioritizing data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs and involving the family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate family-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally relevant plan of care.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s health problems. Develop plans of care that are current, evidence-based, and ensure continuity and family-centered care.
• Implement interventions in the plan of care. Initiate treatments, medications, and emergency or resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures. Provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs of the patient and family with a family-centered approach.
• Evaluate the patient’s progress toward outcomes. Document observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, multi-system monitoring data, and other relevant information in an accessible record. Continuously assess and improve the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to promote high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
• Assess and improve one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards and applicable laws, regulations, and department policies. Maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Integrate ethical principles in all aspects of practice. Enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Collaborate with others in nursing professional development at institutional, local, regional, and state levels. Engage with colleagues and contribute to the professional development of peers and other healthcare providers through positive role-modeling and mentorship programs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery. Involve patient and family in care planning and collaboration with other health care providers.
• Develop and evaluate standards of care that are evidence-based. Identify changes needed in nursing practice using evidence-based approaches and facilitate adoption and adaptation to change. Support the integration of research into practice to improve patient outcomes.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care by utilizing all resources efficiently.

Education

• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5+ years of RN experience at the time of hire. Required
• Associates or Diploma in Nursing. Stroke-specific education requirements apply prior to start. Required
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Experience

• More than 10 months of med-surg or acute specialty setting Required
• 1 year RN experience for all Float Positions Required

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification and unit-specific certification as required by specialty area. Required
• Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona (or valid compact state license) Upon Hire Required
• National certification for unit-specific patient population – Preferred
