POSITION SUMMARY:

The RN Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the twenty-four (24) hour clinical, operational, and administrative management of assigned Behavioral Health, Civil, and Forensic Nursing units. This position provides leadership to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and trauma-informed care while promoting a RN Clinical Supervisor plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates nursing practice and departmental operations, including patient care delivery, staffing, fiscal stewardship, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and the management of human and material resources. This leader fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, professional development, and continuous performance improvement while ensuring compliance with organizational policies, accreditation standards, and applicable state and federal regulations. The RN Clinical Supervisor demonstrates advanced knowledge of psychiatric, behavioral, cognitive, emotional, developmental, and substance use disorders and provides clinical leadership in crisis intervention, risk assessment, de-escalation, and behavioral health emergency management. The position collaborates closely with physicians, psychiatrists, nursing leadership, and the interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure coordinated, evidence-based care. This role participates in the clinical assessment and admission screening of patients referred for behavioral health services to determine appropriate level of care, verify that clinical and legal admission criteria are met, and facilitate timely access to treatment. The RN Clinical Supervisor maintains effective communication with the Clinical Director and other organizational leaders to support strategic initiatives, operational excellence, and exceptional patient outcomes.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or general educational development (GED) certificate required.
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Current/Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas or compact state licensure required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 30 days of hire date and annually thereafter
  • Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE) competency training completed prior to competition of orientation and annually thereafter.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and other computer applications required to support clinical documentation and patient care to be effective on assigned units.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and the ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Successfully completes all required orientation, competency validation, and annual competency assessment associated with the position·
  • English Proficiency- verbal, reading, and writing required.
  • Spanish Proficiency- verbal, reading, and writing preferred.
  • JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of frontline nursing leadership or management experience and three (3) years of clinical nursing experience required; behavioral health leadership experience preferred.
  • Adherence to Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of behavioral health, psychiatric, civil, and forensic nursing practices, including crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and recovery-oriented care.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and professional practice requirements governing behavioral health services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of nursing operations, patient care delivery, staffing, quality improvement, risk management, and performance improvement processes.
  • Ability to lead, coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff while fostering accountability, collaboration, and a culture of safety.
  • Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills in a complex, fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities and frequent interruptions.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with nursing staff, physicians, interdisciplinary team members, patients, families, and organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting clinical, operational, and quality performance data to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment while managing sensitive clinical and personnel matters.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to meet departmental and organizational operational needs, including varied work schedules when necessary.
  • Previous hospital experience in behavioral health, psychiatric nursing, forensic services, civil behavioral health, or a related clinical specialty strongly preferred.
  • The ability to retrieve, communicate and present data and information both verbally and written required as in the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides operational, clinical, and administrative leadership for assigned Behavioral Health, Civil, and Forensic Nursing units to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and trauma-informed care.
  • Promotes and integrates the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals into daily operations, clinical practice, and departmental initiatives.
  • Directs, coordinates, and evaluates nursing services to ensure compliance with organizational policies, evidence-based practice, and applicable federal, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Director and interdisciplinary leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate departmental goals, strategic initiatives, 0and operational priorities.
  • Oversees staffing, scheduling, productivity, and resource utilization to ensure appropriate staffing levels and effective patient care delivery.
  • Recruits, hires, develops, mentors, coaches, and evaluates nursing personnel while fostering professional growth, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Ensures staff competency through orientation, ongoing education, annual competency validation, and professional development programs.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies, procedures, clinical guidelines, and evidence-based practice standards.
  • Promotes a culture of quality, patient safety, and continuous performance improvement by monitoring clinical outcomes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and implementing corrective action plans.
  • Coordinates quality improvement activities, case reviews, performance metrics, and regulatory readiness, utilizing data to improve patient outcomes and operational performance.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory, licensing, accreditation, and legal requirements applicable to behavioral health, civil, and forensic psychiatric services.
  • Collaborates with physicians, psychiatrists, nursing leadership, and the interdisciplinary treatment team to coordinate patient care and support continuity of services across the continuum of care.
  • Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment through effective leadership in crisis management, trauma-informed care, risk reduction, workplace safety, and violence prevention initiatives.
  • Supports evidence-based practice, clinical innovation, and nursing research initiatives that enhance patient care and professional nursing practice.
  • Participates in organizational committees, leadership meetings, and hospital initiatives that support strategic, clinical, and operational objectives.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
