Overview

Job Summary: This role is designated for the RCP who has achieved RCP I expertise on the clinical, departmental and professional level. Employs the use of evidence‑based practice, department and service area initiatives, and grows individually as a professional. Adheres to the Emory Behavioral Standards, Emory Service Culture Guidelines, provides patient and family centered care, and consistently meets departmental/hospital quality & safety goals.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain all competencies; refer and guide others in the use of policies and procedures in the clinical setting.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly and is ready for emergent situations; report failures.
  • Act as role model for peers.
  • Assess unit work, report to supervisor/charge, anticipate needs; provide mentor support for RCP I practitioners.
  • Assist with patient care team discussions during complex patient care situations.
  • Serve as preceptor; complete preceptor course.
  • Accommodate and support critical/specialty care areas: NICU, ICU, ECMO, CVICU, ED, CPET, Pulmonary Rehab, IP (interventional pulmonary), etc.
  • Participate as super user in department‑related in‑services and annual skill sessions; suggest modifications to care.
  • Acquire resources not readily available; serve as resource for ventilator management.
  • Attend department meetings (75%) and in‑services and educational offerings.
  • Support the evaluation of new equipment, review policies and procedures to guide practice.
  • Attend at least one professional local, state, or national respiratory conference every two years.
  • Serve as preceptor/mentor for RCP level 1 respiratory therapists; maintain 15 CEU required annually.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Care; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience or equivalent judgment allowing independent work under general direction.
  • Licensed as active Respiratory Care Practitioner in Georgia; RRT credential by National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Active membership in American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC).
  • Certification: ECMO training, intubation, FCCS instructor, PALS, NRP, AARC Pulmonary Disease Educator, AARC Asthma Educator, AARC Pulmonary Rehabilitation, or equivalent.
  • Other specialty certifications as required: BLS required; ACLS for adult critical care within 6 months; NPS; ACCS; CPFT/RPFT; AE‑C; etc.

Physical Requirements

Medium: Handling items 20–50 lbs (0–33% of work day occasionally, 11–25 lbs 34–66% frequently, 0–10 lbs 67–100% constantly). Maximum lifting 50 lbs; carrying objects up to 25 lbs. Requires occasional to frequent standing & walking, occasional sitting, and close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.

Environmental Factors

Conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks. Exposures include blood‑borne pathogens, bio‑hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation. Shift work and travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, as needed.
