Position Summary:

n

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, provide and deliver geriatric activities for participants of the senior services program.

n

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

n
    n
  • Develops weekly and monthly schedule of activities for senior services.
  • n
  • Prepares National Council of Aging (NCOA) enrollees time sheets for submission to appropriate authority.
  • n
  • Prepares clear and concise written reports from information submitted by workers.
  • n
  • Initiates and completes all written reports in a timely fashion.
  • n
  • Ensures safety for all participants.
  • n
  • Provides necessary in-service education to designated area staff to ensure safe and effective operation of the area.
  • n
  • Provides appropriate referral services for elderly.
  • n
  • Conducts education and presentations to communities on behalf of the elderly and/or Senior Services program.
  • n
  • Serves as an accurate source of information on senior issues.
  • n
  • Assists in preparation and/or serving meals.
  • n
  • Plans and coordinates all Elder activities at all the Senior Service Centers.
  • n
  • Develops monthly activity rosters and distributes to Elders and other interested parties.
  • n
  • Escorts elders to planned events and/or activities, as needed.
  • n
  • Encourages Elders to become involved in activities appropriate to his/her individual needs and level of functioning.
  • n
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    n
  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • n
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • n
  • Knowledge of proper food preparation and serving techniques.
  • n
  • Knowledge of Safety precautions and procedures involving the elderly.
  • n
  • Knowledge of therapeutic, recreational, nutrition and socialization programs.
  • n
  • Knowledge of training needs of adults with physical and/or mental limitations.
  • n
  • Knowledge of sensitivity to the dealings of elders and observant of signs indicating problems elders may be experiencing.
  • n
  • Knowledge of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • n
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • n
  • Skill in first aid and CPR.
  • n
  • Skill in working with the elderly.
  • n
  • Skill in safety precautions and problem solving.
  • n
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to provide in-service training in support of the departments goals and objectives.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Food Handler's certification.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
  • n
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals, families and community groups.
  • n
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

n

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and four years' work experience with elders and activity coordination; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

n
    n
  • Must possess a current Food Handler's certification.
  • n
  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • n
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • n
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • n
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • n
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
