With the opportunity to work alongside supportive management, tackle challenging projects, and develop your career, there is no better time to join AMT.The Resident Engineer (RE) will serve as the primary on-site construction management lead for DDOT infrastructure projects, acting as the key liaison between the Contractor, DDOT Project Manager, and field inspection staff.This role is responsible for administering the construction contract, ensuring compliance with plans/specifications, maintaining quality, controlling schedule and cost, and overseeing inspection staff, consistent with DDOT Construction Management Manual requirements.The RE operates under DDOT oversight and supports delivery of complex roadway and bridge projects in active urban environments.ResponsibilitiesConstruction Management & Contract AdministrationAdminister construction contracts to ensure work is completed in accordance with plans, specifications, schedule, and budgetServe as primary point of contact between contractor and DDOT leadership (PM / Ward Team Leader)Review and resolve RFIs, field issues, and design clarificationsPrepare and manage change orders, cost estimates, and contract modificationsSchedule & Progress ControlMonitor contractor progress against baseline and updated schedulesIdentify and report schedule deviations and risksLead and participate in progress meetings and coordination meetingsCost Control & PaymentsVerify quantities and maintain detailed records of installed workReview and recommend interim and final paymentsMaintain documentation supporting all pay quantities, changes, and adjustmentsQuality Assurance / Quality ControlEnsure all work complies with DDOT specifications and standardsOversee inspection staff and testing activitiesReview submittals, shop drawings, and certificationsIdentify and document non-conforming work and corrective actionsField Oversight & Staff ManagementSupervise inspectors and office engineering staffEnsure inspection staff are trained in plans, specs, MOT, and safety requirementsReview and approve Inspector Daily Reports (IDRs)Maintain daily project diary and recordsDocumentation & ReportingMaintain complete project records for audit compliance (SharePoint / field systems)Track quantities, progress, RFIs, submittals, and change ordersProvide regular reporting to DDOT on: Schedule status; Cost impacts; Field issues and risksSafety & ComplianceMonitor contractor compliance with safety requirementsIdentify unsafe conditions and require corrective actionsEscalate critical safety risks and incidents immediatelyStakeholder & Public CoordinationCoordinate with: Utilities (DC Water, PEPCO, telecom)Regulatory agencies (DOEE, NPS, USACE as applicable)Respond to public concerns and minimize construction impactsSupport DDOT public outreach and communication effortsTypical Project Experience: The Resident Engineer will support projects including:Urban roadway reconstruction (MOT-intensive, phased work)Bridge reconstruction over waterways and sensitive areasUtility relocations and coordinationDrainage, lighting, and streetscape improvementsWork performed under lane closures, night work, and constrained right-of-wayQualificationsMinimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related fieldProfessional Engineer (PE) license required (DDOT expectation for CM/OE-level leadership)Minimum 5+ years of experience in construction management/inspection on highway or bridge projectsExperience managing field staff and administering construction contractsPreferred Qualifications10+ years of progressive experience in CM/CIPrior DDOT, SHA, or other DOT experience strongly preferredExperience with:MOT / Work Zone Traffic ControlUrban utility coordinationEnvironmental compliance (erosion & sediment control, wetlands)Familiarity with:DDOT Construction Management ManualAASHTO, MUTCD, and DDOT SpecificationsTechnical SkillsConstruction management systems (e.g., FieldManager or similar)Schedule review (CPM)Quantity tracking and pay estimate developmentDocument control systems (SharePoint or equivalent)Work EnvironmentPrimarily field-based role with significant on-site presenceNight work and off-hours construction oversight may be requiredWork performed in active traffic and urban construction zonesWhy Join AMT?At AMT, we understand that our most valuable asset is our staff.
