Research Scientist, ILPB

Department: Institute for Lasers Photonics and Biophotonics

Job Type: Part-Time

Position Summary

The University at Buffalo, Institute for Lasers Photonics and Biophotonics, is seeking a Research Scientist to conduct research focused on magnetic nanomaterials, chiral nanomaterials, quantum sensing, magneto-optics, and magnetic-field detection relevant to microelectronic systems.

  • Research activities include the synthesis, processing, and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and core/shell nanostructures (e.g., iron oxide Fe3 O4 and cobalt ferrite CoFe2 O4 ).
  • The employee investigates magnetic anisotropy, exchange coupling, magnetotransport phenomena, tunneling magnetotransport, and spin‑dependent optical processes, and magneto‑optical properties in nanoparticle assemblies for sensing, photonic, and spintronic applications.
  • Experimental duties include nanoparticle synthesis, sample preparation, structural characterization via TEM, EDS, and XRD, and magnetic characterization using VSM and PPMS instrumentation.
  • The employee also performs optical, chiroptical, and magneto‑optical measurements such as absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), magneto‑photoluminescence (MCPL / Magneto‑PL), and related spectroscopic techniques to study excited‑state dynamics and light–matter interactions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD or MD in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience researching nanoparticle‑mediated sensing concepts, including magnetic nanoparticle materials for amplification and detection of weak magnetic fields associated with microelectronic devices.
  • Familiarity with optical and magnetic measurements using custom-built instrumentation, including confocal microscopy, photoluminescence‑based characterization systems, and quantum sensing platforms utilizing spin defects in nanodiamonds and related materials.
  • Experience in experimental design, data analysis, scientific manuscript preparation, presentation of research findings, and collaboration with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.
  • Highly motivated and organized team player with strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of handling light‑sensitive compounds.
