Overview

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) invites applications for two full-time, permanent Research Oceanographer positions to be filled in the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR), part of NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service. The positions will be filled at the ZP-4 level, equivalent to the GS-13/14 grades. The positions will be initially based in Camp Springs, MD, relocating to College Park, MD by Fall 2012. These positions involve conducting satellite oceanographic research and developing, validating, maintaining and supporting satellite algorithms and derived oceanographic data, products, applications and services in support of NOAA’s mission. A Ph.D. is highly desired but not required. Highly motivated candidates are sought who will serve as leaders in their field.

Location: Camp Springs, MD (relocation to College Park, MD by Fall 2012).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct satellite oceanographic research and develop, validate, maintain and support satellite algorithms and derived oceanographic data, products, applications and services in support of NOAA’s mission.
  • Lead in their field and contribute to advancing oceanographic observations using satellite remote sensing.

Qualifications

  • Specialized experience in oceanographic observations (emphasis on satellite remote sensing) and in one or more of the following areas: ocean biology and biogeochemistry (ocean color radiometry, in situ observations, bio-optical modeling), ocean heat content/sea level rise (altimetry, gravity missions and in situ observations), ocean surface vector winds (scatterometry), sea surface roughness (synthetic aperture radar), sea surface temperature (thermal/microwave).
  • Ph.D. is highly desired (but not required).
