Job Title

Registered Nurse (RN) – Spinal Cord Injury Nights Night Shift

Employment Details

Type: Part‑time – Nights
Compensation: Starting at $34/hr (with possibility for increases based on experience, shift differentials, and sign‑on bonuses)
Schedule: Rotating nights, weekend requirement
Hours: 24 hrs/week (7:00pm – 7:30am)

Main Hospital – Grand Rapids, MI
Unit: Inpatient – 3 North Spinal Cord Injury Unit

Job Summary

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation provides hospital‑level care for patients with complex neurological conditions. In the SCI unit, an RN delivers comprehensive nursing care—including patient assessments, care planning, medication administration, and clinical coordination—to patients with high‑acuity neurological needs. The RN collaborates with LPNs, therapists, and physicians to manage complex medical conditions, support intensive therapy, and facilitate safe discharge planning. This role is ideal for RNs who thrive in a hospital‑level rehab environment and want to help patients regain independence after spinal cord injury.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of RN license and applicable regulations.
  • Perform detailed patient assessments and develop patient‑centered plans of care in collaboration with interdisciplinary team.
  • Delegate and supervise non‑licensed staff, ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in quality‑improvement activities, reporting adverse events, near misses, and contributing to audits.
  • Promote patient safety by following all department policies, recognizing safety concerns, and communicating promptly with nursing leadership.
  • Deliver excellent customer service, efficiently handling confidential information and performing customer‑service recovery when needed.
  • Maintain effective communication with physicians and interdisciplinary colleagues, fostering collaborative relationships.
  • Support professional development by assisting in staff selection, orientation of new team members, and student rotations.
  • Adhere to financial responsibilities related to billing and cost‑effective nursing care.

Essential Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Michigan.
  • Associate’s degree in nursing required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN) preferred; all new hires must obtain CRRN by their third anniversary.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Experience as an RN in rehabilitation or acute care preferred but not mandatory.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision‑making, delegation, leadership, time‑management, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under time constraints, handle interruptions, and prioritize tasks.

Physical Requirements

  • Transport or position up to 10pounds occasionally; use of hand or elbow to lift up to 25pounds occasionally.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and hazardous materials; must understand and follow safety policies.
  • Competent use of computer systems for documentation.
