The Staff RN works under the supervision of the Med‑Surg Nurse Manager to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and supervise patient care on the unit. The RN directs co‑workers in the implementation of the patient’s plan of care and performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Provides nursing care using the Nursing Process by completing assessment, developing a plan of care, implementing the plan, and documenting appropriately in the patient chart. (50%)
- Evaluates patient’s response to care and updates the plan of care. (30%)
- Oversees the delegation of the patient plan of care to unit staff. (20%)
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Engages in patient/family teaching as appropriate.
- Maintains professional standards by participating in educational opportunities and performance improvement activities.
- Communicates with the Health Care Team.
- Adheres to unit/department budgetary practices.
- Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.
- Participates in further learning opportunities offered by the organization.
- All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Team Advanced: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management
Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in nursing required; Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
- Two years of general Medical‑Surgical/Charge Nurse experience required.
Skills and Interpersonal Requirements
- Good basic clinical skills for delivering care in an acute care facility.
- Good interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families, and co‑workers.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Exposure to stressful situations including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex, if required.
- Must move freely about the facility and perform job functions as outlined.
- Vision and hearing normal or with corrected devices.
- Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking; may involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Likely exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing protocols.
- Requires dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
- Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must occasionally lift/carry 21‑50 lbs, frequently 20 lbs, and regularly <10 lbs.
