Unit Overview

Acute Care Surgical Services is a nationally recognized AACN Sliver Beacon 28-bed inpatient unit and Center of Bariatric Excellence, providing care for surgical oncology, plastic surgery, microsurgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, and urology patients. The unit includes general and progressive level of care beds and delivers high-quality care for a broad spectrum of surgical diseases, including the most critically ill and injured patients. VCU Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region verified by the State of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons for Adult, Pediatric, and Burn trauma. Teamwork and professional growth through clinical ladder advancements, certification, and education are emphasized.

Clinical Nurse I Responsibilities

Provides direct, age‑specific patient care, administers medications, identifies incompatibilities, educates patients and families, offers support, participates in facility quality improvement initiatives, and follows integrated care plans. Begins developing leadership skills and providing direction at the unit level.

Clinical Nurse II Responsibilities

Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, anticipates and intervenes in patient situation changes, mobilizes resources, provides directed education and leadership, delivers accurate documentation, and safely administers medications.

Clinical Nurse III Responsibilities

Applies advanced clinical knowledge to a specific patient population, serves as a role model and educator, anticipates changes in patient situations, provides direction and leadership, documents care, and administers medications safely.

Licensure & Certification Requirements

• For hire: current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state (Clin I, II, III).
• For continued employment: current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP certification or equivalent (Clin I, II, III).

Experience Requirements

• Clin I: N/A
• Clin II: 12-24 months RN experience.
• Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience.

Experience Preferred

• Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting.
• Clin II & III: Academic health‑care experience and exposure to similar patient population.

Education & Training Requirements

• Clin I, II, III: Diploma or Associate Degree from an accredited professional nursing program.
• All RN without a Bachelor’s degree will need to enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered.

Education & Training Preferred

• Clin I, II, III: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
• Clin III: Certification in specialty area.

Independent Action(s)

Follows documented physician/licensed provider orders. Practices within Virginia nursing regulations, guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national practice standards, and adheres to VCUHS policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Organizes work, delegates, and supervises others (RN, LPN, care partners, unit secretaries, etc.).

Additional Position Requirements

Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotations and schedules established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Hourly requirements may adjust to meet unit needs.

• Lift 20-50 lbs.
• Exposure to hazardous and infectious substances.
• Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing steps/ladder, reaching overhead.
• Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
• Fast‑pace and steady‑pace environment; ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent intense interactions in noise.
