Position Overview

Registered Nurse – Menino Operating Room (Inpatient Surgery) at Boston Medical Center
Location: Menino Operating Room
Schedule: 36 hours, Days/Nights, Every 3rd Weekend, Call Required

Position Summary

The registered nurse adheres to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing rules and regulations and is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the healthcare continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department and following established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
• Coordinate care for patients and families within the surgical service specialties.
• Adhere to Massachusetts nursing regulations and institutional policies.
• Facilitate communication with health‑care team members, patients, and families.
• Conduct quality improvement and research utilization projects as applicable.
• Effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.

Qualifications – Education and Licensure

• Diploma, ASN, or BSN in Nursing (BSN preferred).
• Ability to obtain a BSN within four years.
• Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Previous operating room experience preferred.
• Basic computer proficiency, including access to and interpretation of computerized data.
• Effective interpersonal and organizational skills to prioritize and complete assigned work.
• Multilingual capabilities beyond English, appropriate to patient populations.
• Relevant clinical experience or specialty certifications required for certain practice areas (e.g., peri‑operative, total therapy, epidemiology).
• Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement projects.
• Ability to delegate and manage patient care activities effectively.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for diverse patient populations.
• Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities in the surgical setting.
• Capacity to manage stress related to critical patient care and organizational changes.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Range: $38.05 – $75.33 per hour (based on qualifications).
