At Boston Medical Center (BMC), the Observation Unit is comprised of 28 bays, adjacent to the PACU. The unit provides protocol‑driven care to patients whose length of stay is typically 24 hours or less, with a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment. Patient types include abdominal pain, ruled out MI, acute wound care, and acute respiratory issues. The unit is run by Hospitalists and Family Medicine with documentation tailored to this specific population.

Position Summary

As an RN in the Medical Surgical and Observation Department, you will deliver exceptional nursing care using the patient‑centered model and be supported by a collaborative nursing organization.

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care; assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, evaluate, and educate patients.
  • Communicate with health‑care team members, patients, and families.
  • Coordinate and delegate appropriate patient‑care activities to inter‑professional colleagues.
  • Update and manage patient records and enter/interpret computerized data.
  • Follow guidelines and policies established by BMC’s nursing organization.
  • Assist the leadership team with quality‑improvement projects as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Licensed to practice professional nursing as an RN in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Knowledgeable in basic life support (BLS); advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification required in certain units.
  • Diploma, ASN, or BSN (preferred). Ability to obtain a BSN within four years.
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty; certification required for certain practice areas.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to meet job responsibilities.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Fluency in another language a plus.
