Overview

Registered Nurses (RN) play a pivotal role in the nursing industry, providing critical care and support to patients across a variety of healthcare settings. These professionals are responsible for assessing patient conditions, recording medical histories, administering treatments, performing diagnostic tests, and educating patients on their illnesses or injuries. RNs are also essential in implementing and evaluating patient care plans, communicating with healthcare teams, and advocating for patient rights. They may specialize in various areas such as critical care, pediatrics, or geriatrics.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient conditions and document findings
• Record medical histories and update patient charts
• Administer medications and treatments per orders
• Perform diagnostic tests as prescribed and monitor results
• Educate patients and families about illnesses, injuries, and care plans
• Implement and evaluate individual patient care plans

Qualifications / Requirements

• Education: diploma, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree in nursing
• Licensure: pass the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs (NCLEX-RN) to practice
• Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Skills: critical thinking, communication, empathy, attention to detail

Before becoming a RN, individuals may have roles such as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Medical Assistant (MA).
