We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Registered Nurse—Med Surg 2 Main—Full Time. In this role, the successful candidate executes professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans in order to provide for the comfort and well‑being of patients and their family or support system. The RN assesses the patient's needs, plans and implements the treatment plan, observes and evaluates the patient's progress and documents pertinent observations. They work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health team to meet the holistic needs of the patient, direct the delivery of nursing care by the other members of the nursing team, and participate in the orientation process of new employees.

Job Responsibilities

• Collect patient health data by involving the patient, family and other health care providers.
• Perform initial assessment based on patient's presentation.
• Record relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
• Demonstrate awareness of the special needs of each age group or culture served as well as those patients with disabilities.
• Perform ongoing assessments as established by department policy and as warranted by the patient's response.
• Incorporate discharge planning into the admission process.
• Analyze the assessment data to determine problem identification and identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
• Combine theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise to anticipate and plan for the identified patient and family care needs.
• Validate potential problems with the patient, family and other providers.
• Identify any cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient/family dynamics related to the patient’s care.
• Recognize the patient’s comfort/pain management needs that may impact the plan of care and desired outcome.
• Identify actual or potential knowledge deficits for the patient and / or family.
• Communicate expected outcomes to the patient, family and other providers to promote continuity of care.
• Develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcome.
• Collaborate with the patient, family and appropriate healthcare providers in developing the plan of care.
• Formulate a family‑centered plan of care consistent with the assessment of the patient’s needs and the physician’s treatment plan; integrate identified cultural, ethnic and spiritual aspects of care into the plan.
• Incorporate teaching and learning principles in the plan of care based on the identified learning needs and developmental level.
• Assist the patient and family in identifying and securing services to address health‑related needs.
• Communicate the plan of care to the patient, family and other providers to promote continuity of care.
• Document the initial plan of care and provide updates as required.
• Establish realistic goals, set appropriate priorities and use time efficiently.
• Implement the plan of care for each patient and perform appropriate patient monitoring.
• Adapt nursing procedures to meet the needs of the individual patient.
• Provide education to the patient and family utilizing the educational assessment.
• Recognize hazards to patient safety and take action to maintain a safe environment.
• Work collaboratively with other team members to implement interventions.
• Assign or delegate tasks as defined by the state nurse practice act and according to the knowledge and skills of the caregiver.
• Demonstrate knowledge regarding drug administration, incompatibilities, contraindications and adverse effects; seek out appropriate resources when uncertain about medication administration.
• Comply with medication policy and procedure for order transcription/verification, drug administration and documentation.
• Evaluate the patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes.
• Document the patient’s responses to interventions and revisions to the plan of care.
• Use ongoing assessment data to revise expected outcomes and the patient plan of care as needed.
• Identify barriers to achieving desired patient/family outcomes and utilize resources to diminish the negative impact on the patient/family.
• Communicate with and include the patient, family and other providers in the evaluation process.
• Provide care that demonstrates ethical beliefs and respect for patient’s rights.
• Demonstrate and participate in activities that support customer satisfaction.
• Participate in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and support measures to improve practice.
• Maintain effective interactions with staff on the unit and in other departments.
• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and other providers.
• Act as a facilitator when dealing with other staff about issues concerning patient care and/or functioning on the unit.
• Seek out and utilize the Nurse Manager or Nursing Administrative Supervisor to address issues that require their assistance to resolve.
• Accept feedback from peers and management to improve patient care and/or unit functioning.
• Engage in performance appraisal identifying areas of strength as well as areas where professional development would be beneficial.
• Collaborate with management to improve the environment of care for patients, families and personnel.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the principles, policies and procedures specific to the assigned nursing service.
• Maintain knowledge base through participation in learning situations such as departmental meetings, educational programs, professional association memberships, journal review, or committee participation.
• Comply with staff meeting attendance requirement.

Minimum Qualifications

• Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of a two‑year training at an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• BLS certification and de‑escalation training.
• ACLS (ICU, Float pool, Emergency Dept).
• TCAR Certification (SICU, PACU).
• PALS and TNCC (within first year) for Emergency Dept.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients and their families, demonstrating recognition of cultural diversity.
• Customer service excellence in practice.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills.
• Analytical ability to assess and develop solutions to clinical situations or unit problems.
• Maintenance of knowledge and proficiency in the clinical area and age group served.
• Ability to frequently lift or carry more than 75 lbs., push or pull more than 100 lbs., and bend, squat, kneel, climb steps or ladder and reach above shoulders.

Required Licenses: Registered Nurse License-NYS

Preferred Qualifications

• 1‑year critical care experience preferred for AOU RN.
• BSN preferred.
• PALS preferred.
• Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia (e.g., CAPA) preferred.
• 1‑year of nursing experience in preoperative, perioperative, or post‑anesthesia care.
• Experience with patient assessment, education, and care planning for pre‑ and post‑operative patients.
• Prior experience in discharge planning and coordination of perioperative patients.
• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, including documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.

Pay Transparency

Salary range: $106,916.04 – $138,356.04 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
