Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal‑directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.
Location / Units
- 10E Orthopedic – MUSC’s Orthopedic Unit located on 10 East in the Main Hospital. 10 East is a 20‑bed acute care, post‑operative unit specializing in orthopedic and urology surgeries, including total joint replacement, ortho trauma, ortho oncology, and urologic procedures.
- 10W Trauma/Spine – Located on the top floor of the Main Hospital, 10 West is a 21‑bed acute care unit that handles traumatic injuries, elective spine surgeries, and overflow from the Emergency Department. The unit offers a supportive environment for staff and patients.
Hours and Schedule
36 scheduled weekly hours. Rotating shifts (United States of America). Work shift: 3–12‑hour shifts with variations based on departmental needs.
Job Summary / Purpose
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal‑directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.
Minimum Training and Education
Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.
Required Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations
Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or an AHA‑recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes.
- Ability to work from elevated areas, confined/cramped spaces, and perform kneeling positions.
- Ability to bend and twist at the waist; perform squatting and reach overhead.
- Ability to perform gross and fine motor activities with fingers and hands.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted and lower objects 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 in. unassisted.
- Ability to lift from 36″ to overhead 25 lbs and exert up to 50 lbs of force.
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or both eyes.
- Ability to see, recognize objects, discriminate colors, determine distance/relationship between objects, and maintain good peripheral vision.
- Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
- Ability to manage stressful situations, work rotating shifts, overtime, latex‑safe environment, and respirator use where required.
