Job Summary

The Radiation Therapist will schedule and simulate patients, prepare and deliver ionizing radiation treatments under the direction of the radiation oncologist, and promptly document treatments and relevant notes in the medical record.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily quality assurance activities on radiation-producing equipment, record results, and report equipment malfunctions.
  • Fabricate patient immobilization and beam-altering devices, including Cerrobend blocks and vacuum bags.
  • Conduct simulation procedures to identify treatment area, obtain accurate data for dosimetric calculation, and assist Simulation Tech with positioning and immobilization.
  • Accurately position patients and set treatment parameters to meet prescription requirements.
  • Assist with dosimetric calculations and data entry as needed.
  • Process and label imaging studies; document procedures in the medical record.
  • Practice center-wide and department radiation safety policies under the ALARA principle.
  • Maintain a safe, neat, orderly, and well-supplied work area.
  • Participate in the educational program, complete annual educational requirements, and attend in‑service meetings.
  • Attend all other required meetings.

Qualifications

  • Must hold or obtain current licensure as an RTT with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent.
  • Must hold or obtain current BLS certification.
  • Comprehension of standard radiation therapy techniques and principles of radiation physics.
  • Understanding of linear accelerator operations and electronic record and verify.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Professional interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Mathematical proficiency for accurate dose calculations and hand calculations for therapy and prescription protocols.
  • Common-sense application of instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to work well in small teams to accomplish departmental goals.
  • Ability to take verbal instruction and apply it effectively without direct supervision.
