This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Corrections.
Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and medication management for individuals with mental health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders and history of trauma.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans in coordination with psychologists, social workers, nursing staff, and Security personnel.
- Provide ongoing psychopharmacologic treatment and crisis intervention as clinically indicated.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and case consultations.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Offer clinical leadership and consultation to nursing and mental health staff on psychiatric care and medication management.
- Ensure continuity of care during transitions, including intake, intra-facility transfers, and reentry planning.
- Evaluate, prepare, and participate in civil commitment proceedings for patients with severe mental illness who require Involuntary treatment or hospitalization due to risk of harm to self or others; or inability to take care for themselves.
- Adhere to Department of Corrections policies, professional standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.
Monday- Friday position
Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
