- Organization Unit Overview: The School of Dental Medicine includes ten administrative offices and four academic departments: Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences. It serves as an educational institution and clinic provider for students, residents, and the North Carolina community.
Job Duties
The Prosthodontics Faculty is responsible for teaching prosthodontics to pre‑doctoral students, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residents, and General Practice Residency (GPR) residents. The faculty, appointed in the Division of Prosthodontics within General Dentistry, collaborates closely with other departments and university offices to support educational programs and the mission of the School of Dental Medicine.
Key responsibilities include:
- Work closely with the Division Director and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics to develop and implement curriculum for general dentists.
- Coordinate and deliver curricular content in the simulation lab and didactic settings for pre‑doctoral students.
- Collaborate with informatics personnel to optimize technology for teaching and assessment.
- Ensure students and residents are competent in managing patients requiring prosthodontic care.
- Teach clinical coverage and curricular content for AEGD and GPR programs.
- Teach procedures outside of prosthodontics in the general dentistry model.
- Actively participate in the faculty practice and emergency call duties.
- Assist the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs with quality assurance and compliance.
- Serve on school committees, boards, and professional societies.
- Represent the School in internal and external meetings.
- Build teams, identify and resolve problems, and conduct research and scholarly activities for promotion.
- Commit to the mission, vision, and evidence‑based teaching of the School of Dental Medicine.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Benefits and Eligibility
Contingent upon funding. Eligible for UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) with matching contributions. Qualifies for voluntary medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as supplemental plans including critical illness, flexible spending, cancer, and disability coverage. Not eligible for the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS), though transfers from a North Carolina state agency may continue TSERS participation and may elect to participate in ORP if not previously offered.
Minimum Education and Experience
- DDS or DMD (or equivalent).
- Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics. Current residents in CODA‑accredited prosthodontics programs are eligible if they will complete the program by the intended start date.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
- Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
- Experience in teaching prosthodontics at the graduate level.
- Proficiency with simulation laboratory instruction.
- Background in informatics tools for education and assessment.
- Commitment to community‑based and generalist dental education.
