Project Manager II – Utilities / InfrastructureIndustry: Electric Utility / Energy / InfrastructureExperience Level: 5–10 YearsLocation: Birmingham, ALClient: Southern Company services.Position SummaryThe Project Manager II is responsible for planning, executing, and closing capital and operational projects within a regulated utility environment. This role ensures projects are delivered safely, on time, within scope, and within budget while maintaining compliance with regulatory and company standards.The Project Manager partners with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, supply chain, and regulatory teams to successfully execute projects supporting generation, transmission, distribution, and infrastructure initiatives.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Planning & ExecutionDevelop comprehensive project plans defining: ScopeObjectivesSchedulesResource requirementsBudget estimatesLead execution of utility capital and O&M projectsApply structured project management methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, or hybrid as appropriate)Team Leadership & CoordinationAssemble and lead cross-functional teams including: EngineersField crewsContractorsVendorsOperations staffAssign responsibilities and provide direction to achieve project milestonesFoster a safety-first culture across project activitiesBudget & Cost ControlDevelop and manage project budgetsTrack expenses, forecast costs, and manage financial performanceEnsure projects remain within approved budget constraintsScope & Change ManagementDefine and manage project scopeMonitor scope changes and ensure proper documentation and approvalsCommunicate changes to stakeholders and leadershipRisk & Issue ManagementIdentify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategiesProactively resolve issues and escalate when necessaryManage regulatory, safety, constructability, and operational risksSchedule & Performance ManagementDevelop detailed project schedules and monitor progressEnsure projects meet timeline and milestone commitmentsImplement quality assurance processes to meet engineering and construction standardsStakeholder CommunicationProvide regular updates to project stakeholders and leadershipMaintain alignment with internal departments and external partnersAddress concerns and ensure transparent communicationProject CloseoutEnsure all project deliverables are completed and documentedObtain stakeholder sign-offConduct post-project evaluations and lessons learned reviewsRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Project Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field5–10 years of project management experienceProven experience delivering projects in regulated, industrial, or infrastructure environmentsProficiency with project management tools and scheduling softwareStrong understanding of project management methodologiesExcellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skillsStrong organizational and time management abilitiesPreferred QualificationsExperience in: Power generationTransmission or distributionSubstation or infrastructure projectsPMP certification or equivalentExperience working with contractors and field personnelFamiliarity with utility regulatory requirementsWork EnvironmentUtility / corporate office with field coordination responsibilitiesInteraction with engineering, operations, and construction teamsFast-paced, safety-critical environment
