Onsite Contract Management & Operations

Traveling / Project-Based | Permanent | U.S. Projects

We are working with a well-established structural steel organization seeking an experienced On-Site Project Manager / Steel Field Lead to support major structural steel projects across the U.S.

This is a field-based traveling position , suited to someone who understands steel erection from the ground up and is comfortable being the key link between the job site, erection subcontractors, project management team, fabrication operations, and the general contractor.

Projects are large, complex structural steel packages , including major data center, healthcare, commercial and industrial developments. Current project demand is particularly strong in Virginia , although future assignments can be located elsewhere across the U.S.

The Role

You will be based on the project site, overseeing the day-to-day coordination of structural steel erection and ensuring that material, schedule, safety and field issues remain visible and are addressed quickly.

You will work closely with erection foremen and subcontractors rather than directly running an ironworker crew, while maintaining constant communication with the Senior Project Manager and office-based project team.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating structural steel erection activities with subcontracted erectors
  • Working closely with erection foremen on site logistics, sequencing and material requirements
  • Coordinating material laydown areas and steel deliveries
  • Attending erector, GC and contractor coordination meetings
  • Monitoring erection progress, manpower and schedule
  • Coordinating with other trades and identifying potential site conflicts
  • Anticipating site-readiness issues before they impact erection
  • Resolving missing, damaged or incorrect steel
  • Communicating fabrication, detailing and field changes back to the project team
  • Reading and interpreting structural steel drawings
  • Tracking inspections, deficiencies and punch-list items
  • Reviewing extra-work time tickets
  • Monitoring site safety and supporting safe project execution
  • Acting as a key field representative throughout the project lifecycle

What We’re Looking For

This position could be particularly well suited to an experienced Steel Erection Superintendent, Field Project Manager, Steel Field Manager or similar structural steel site leader who is ready to take ownership of the field coordination side of major projects.

You should have:

  • Proven experience coordinating erection subcontractors, foremen and other trades
  • Experience working on substantial and complex construction projects
  • Strong structural drawing interpretation skills
  • The ability to identify and communicate field issues quickly and accurately
  • Excellent organization and communication skillsConfidence representing the project team in site and contractor meetings
  • Strong competency with Bluebeam/PDFs, Microsoft Project, Excel and Word
  • Current OSHA 30
  • Valid driver's license
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively and live near project sites

A minimum two-year associate degree is formally required, with a four-year degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline preferred.

Travel & Project Schedule

This is not an office-based PM position . Candidates should be comfortable making travel a significant part of their role.

Individual project assignments typically last around one year , with the location changing as projects are completed. Many current projects are large data center developments in Virginia .

The company provides a substantial travel package, including:

  • $220 per day per diem, 7 days per week while assigned
  • One company-paid flight home per month OR a flight for your spouse to visit you
  • Mileage associated with travel to the project/job site can be expensed
  • Healthcare and family-plan options

Historical discretionary bonuses have also been paid, although bonus eligibility and structure for this particular position would be discussed during the process.

Why Consider It?

This is an opportunity to move into a key field leadership position with an established structural steel organization carrying a significant backlog of major projects.

You’ll be involved with large-scale steel packages , have considerable responsibility on site, and work alongside experienced fabrication, project management, engineering and erection teams.

For someone who has built their career in structural steel erection and enjoys being on the job site rather than sitting behind a desk five days a week, this offers a natural progression into broader project leadership.
