Onsite Full Time Civil Engineering

Project Engineer, Civil Engineering

SB&O is a Southern California civil engineering, land surveying, and planning firm. We seek a licensed Project Engineer to lead technical design for land development projects. You will work with engineers, surveyors, consultants, and clients. This is a design-focused role with growing coordination responsibility. Full project ownership belongs to the Project Manager role.

What you will do

  • Lead grading, drainage, utility, and stormwater design. Prepare and review plans, calculations, drainage studies, and water quality management plans.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil 3D to guide plan and model production. Resolve technical issues in surfaces, corridors, and pipe networks.
  • Lead technical quality checks for assigned plan sets. Review the work of less-experienced engineers and provide clear direction.
  • Sign and seal work within your professional license and responsible charge.
  • Coordinate technical work with architects, landscape architects, surveyors, and other consultants.
  • Support plan review and agency responses. Address technical questions during construction and coordinate with the survey and staking team.
  • Track your task budgets. Raise scope and budget risks early, and support timely change-order requests.
  • Communicate directly with client project managers on technical matters. Help junior engineers develop their skills.

What you bring

  • An active Professional Engineer license in California. This is a requirement for the Project Engineer title.
  • Typically at least 7 years of relevant civil engineering experience. We assess demonstrated design leadership and licensure, not years alone.
  • Independent design experience in land development grading, hydrology and hydraulics, drainage, water and sewer utilities, stormwater compliance, and water quality management plans.
  • Practical AutoCAD Civil 3D skill. You can review models and plan sets and guide other designers.
  • Experience reviewing technical work, resolving design conflicts, and coordinating with consultants and agencies.
  • Clear written and verbal communication. You raise quality, scope, and schedule risks early.

Helpful experience

  • Residential land development in Southern California.
  • Technical support during plan review, permitting, and construction.
  • Mentoring engineers and coordinating survey inputs or base maps.
