Project Engineer III, InstrumentsThis position is primarily responsible for performing Project Engineering activities in support of the development of new MSD instrumentation systems. Additional responsibilities include mentoring junior project engineers, independently managing program budgets and schedules, and developing improved processes and best practices for the engineering department.Duties and Responsibilities:Ensure that instrument development projects conform to established quality systemsLead the development and maintenance of requirements, specifications, and other design control documentsManage purchasing and vendor activities for COTS and custom parts as well as BOM establishment and maintenanceGenerate and implement Design Change Requests and Production Change Orders in collaboration with project team membersLead efforts to critically analyze part designs and drawings to identify issues in purchase or cost-saving opportunitiesParticipate in cross-functional management meetings detailing schedule, budget, and personnel concernsTriage multi-project purchasing, design control activities, and related issues to keep projects on scheduleMentor junior project engineers to internal methods and best practicesSource electronic and mechanical components based on required performance specificationsUnderstand and follow laboratory safety precautions and ensure compliance with company safety policiesSpecific duties may vary depending upon departmental requirementsExperience and Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline. Degree in mechanical, electrical, or bioengineering preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree.Minimum of 7 years of experience in mechanical/electrical design or project engineering roles.Experience with prototype or low volume electro-mechanical systems preferred.Experience in design review of electro-mechanical systems.Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or other modeling software.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to critically interpret drawings and models of electromechanical systems.Knowledge of fabrication processes including machining, sheet metal, 3D printing, and material and finish selection.High level of proficiency in MS Office products including familiarity with macros (especially Excel, Word, and Outlook).Excellent oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills.Ability to clearly communicate issues/problems and results that impact schedules, accuracy and reliability of data, and product quality.A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected including the ability to multi-task and work productively in a demanding environment with changing priorities.Ability to independently complete assignments with minimal or no supervision.Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.Ability to train junior project engineers.Physical Demands:This position requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, utilize equipment necessary to perform the job, and move about the workplace.
Occasional lifting up to 40 lbs.Work Environment:This position is performed in a traditional production environment and/or light-manufacturing facility.Compensation Summary:The annual base salary for this position ranges from $98,800 to $150,700. This salary range represents a general guideline as MSD considers other factors when presenting an offer of employment, such as scope and responsibilities of the position, external market factors, and the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience. Employees may qualify for a discretionary or non-discretionary bonus in addition to their base salary.
