Project Engineer II / Gas Technologist Engineer II

Location: Gastonia, NC (Preferred) or Asheville, NC

Are you an engineer who enjoys turning customer needs into practical engineering designs and seeing projects through to construction?

We are seeking a Project Engineer II / Gas Technologist Engineer II to support natural gas distribution engineering projects throughout central North Carolina. This position is ideal for an engineer with at least 3 years of experience who enjoys engineering design, project coordination, and managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

You will work with internal engineering, construction, and Sales & Marketing teams to develop engineering designs, cost estimates, drawings, permits, and technical documentation for new customer installations and gas distribution infrastructure projects.

What You'll Do:

• Develop engineering designs for natural gas distribution projects, including new customer service installations and gas main extensions.
• Prepare engineering drawings, cost estimates, permit applications, and technical documentation.
• Review utility infrastructure and pipeline mapping using GIS systems.
• Develop complete engineering design packages for construction handoff.
• Coordinate with Sales & Marketing, Engineering, Construction, and external stakeholders to keep projects moving forward.
• Manage approximately 20–25 active projects while maintaining deadlines and deliverables.
• Coordinate with DOT agencies and local municipalities regarding roadway encroachments and project requirements.
• Provide occasional field support and follow up on construction activities.
• Maintain accurate engineering documentation and project records.

What We're Looking For:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (required).
• Minimum 3 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Experience with engineering design, preferably within utilities, pipelines, infrastructure, or a related industry.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook.
• Ability to take ownership of projects and proactively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Experience (Not Required):

• ESRI GIS experience (highly preferred).
• Natural gas distribution or pipeline engineering design.
• Utility infrastructure or civil engineering design.
• AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Utility permitting, roadway encroachment documentation, or DOT coordination.
• Familiarity with utility industry codes, regulations, and engineering standards.

Work Environment & Location:

• Preferred location: Gastonia, NC; Asheville, NC also considered.
• Primarily office-based engineering design and project coordination.
• Less than 25% fieldwork.
• Projects concentrated throughout central North Carolina, including Gastonia, Concord, Cabarrus County, and Mecklenburg County.
