Work Schedule

10 to 18 hours per week to be scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Hours vary due to student and class scheduling throughout the year. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.

Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in . Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in , 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC . TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Position Summary: The Open-Door Program is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program that provides academic support to disadvantaged college students.

Provide individual and group tutoring in math, support using information technology applications and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

Functional Responsibilities:

Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses. Participate in professional development offerings. Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a “B” average or better in the content area or related subject area.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
  • Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
  • Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
  • Math tutors should be proficient in math concepts from developmental mathematics to pre-calculus, including trigonometry.

Additional Considerations

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours, approximately 10-18 hours a week preferred.
