General Summary

The Professional Cardiovascular Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care within the Cardiovascular and Electrophysiology Laboratory. The RN performs specialized knowledge, judgement, and skills in line with hospital policy, procedure, philosophy, and licensure. Responsibilities include assisting physicians with diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations, peripheral procedures, endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), electrophysiology procedures such as ablations, implantable cardiac defibrillator insertions/revisions, pacemaker insertions/revisions, EP studies, loop recorder insertions, structural heart procedures (TAVR, LAAO), and interventional neurology procedures (carotid stenting, stroke thrombectomy, cerebrovascular aneurysm embolization, TCAR). The RN conducts cardiac tests, prepares procedure rooms, preps patients, records information, assists physicians, circulates procedures, is proficient in X‑ray fluoroscopy, performs blood work analyses, operates intra‑cardiac ultrasound, directs safety guidelines, and functions independently during diagnostic and intervention procedures. The role requires varied hours, shift lengths, and response to on‑call paging, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Prepare the patient care and/or procedure area prior to the arrival of the first patient or beginning of the first procedure to ensure safe, efficient delivery of care.
• Receive and review charts for scheduled patients as soon as available, ensuring proper documentation, lab results, and consent are present. Communicate abnormal lab results or other concerns to the physician or Nurse Practitioner.
• Pre‑prepare the patient for the procedure in a timely and efficient manner.
• Provide nursing care, including complete systems assessment and monitoring for the immediate pre‑ and post‑procedural cardiovascular and electrophysiology patient. Communicate abnormal findings immediately to the physician/NP and provide appropriate handoff to the receiving RN.
• Participate in the “Full Stop” and/or “Time Out” process prior to each procedure with the physician and other team members per Bayhealth and unit policies.
• Administer procedural sedation per Bayhealth and unit policies.
• Accurately document handoffs, pre‑ and post‑procedure care in the electronic documentation system in real time, including all procedures performed in the Cardiovascular and EP Lab in the MacLab/CardioLab system.
• Independently circulate all procedures performed in the Cardiovascular and EP Lab; accurately record/document procedure log in MacLab/CardioLab system in real time.
• Maintain an ongoing safe, therapeutic environment for all patients and families, ensuring sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy.
• Actively participate in the preceptorship of new staff members.
• Enhance professional growth and development through education, workshops, in‑services, and current literature. Maintain required certifications and complete yearly unit and hospital mandatories prior to performance evaluation. Seek specialty certification/advanced degree.
• Perform all other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience

• Education: Associate Degree; Nursing; or Nursing Diploma.
• Credentials: Basic Life Support (or ability to attend on‑site class), Registered Nurse (RN), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
• Experience: New graduates considered, but experience in a Cath/EP Lab is highly preferred.

• Education: Bachelor Degree; Nursing.
• Credentials: None.
• Experience: Experience as an RN in a Cardiovascular and EP Lab.
