We are seeking an experienced Product Designer to support the Air Force to help in developing and operating modernized applications that are used daily by the warfighter. This is an exciting new initiative where the Air Force is mirroring Silicon Valley processes and capabilities to quickly deploy new capabilities. Candidates must be passionate, energized, and excited to work on modern architectures and solve challenging problems for our clients.
Position Description (what you will do)
- Conduct user research — interviews, contextual inquiries, and usage/behavior analysis — with customer stakeholders and end users of the team’s web application to understand how they work with and rely on the platform.
- Translate research findings into actionable UX recommendations, working closely with the team’s front‑end and full‑stack engineers to prioritize and implement improvements to the application’s user experience.
- Own end‑to‑end UX/UI design for the team’s web application — the primary interface through which users browse, search, and inspect software artifacts (container images, scan results, SBOMs, attestations) within Iron Bank — including wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs.
- Establish and maintain a consistent design system/component library and interaction patterns for the application, in partnership with the engineers who implement them.
- Drive the single‑pane‑of‑glass consolidation of the application’s user experience, ensuring newly unified workflows are intuitive and grounded in observed user behavior rather than assumption.
- Ensure designs meet federal accessibility (Section 508/WCAG) standards.
- Serve as the team’s design resource, partnering directly with product owners, engineers, and government stakeholders to represent the user’s perspective throughout planning and delivery — with oversight and guidance available from leadership as needed for prioritization and scope decisions.
- Participate in agile delivery (sprint planning, design reviews, demos) with the broader web development team.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional experience in product/UX design, including conducting user research and translating it into design decisions.
- Demonstrated experience conducting user interviews, usability testing, and behavioral/usage analysis to inform design direction.
- Strong proficiency with modern design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma or similar).
- Experience designing for and maintaining design systems/component libraries used by engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508/WCAG) and how they apply to design decisions.
- Ability to operate as a team’s sole or primary design resource, balancing research, design, and stakeholder collaboration, with oversight and guidance available from leadership as needed.
- Strong communication skills, able to present research findings and design rationale clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have:
- Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community programs, particularly Platform One or other DoD software factory environments.
- Experience designing for technical/developer-facing tools or data‑heavy applications (e.g., dashboards, search/browse interfaces for large datasets).
- Familiarity with the software supply chain/container ecosystem (container images, SBOMs, vulnerability scan data) relevant to the data this application surfaces.
- Experience consolidating or redesigning legacy interfaces into a modern, unified product.
- Experience collaborating directly with government or enterprise customers on research and design validation.
