This role ensures safe handling of lithium-ion and other battery chemistries, mitigates risks of fire, explosion, and chemical exposure, and drives compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations. The manager will be a key partner in protecting employees, the community, and the environment while supporting sustainable recycling operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Process Safety Leadership

• Establish and maintain process safety management (PSM) programs tailored to battery recycling operations.

• Promote a proactive safety culture across plant operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.

• Hazard Identification & Risk Management

• Conduct hazard analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA) for processes involving battery dismantling, shredding, and chemical recovery.

• Assess risks related to thermal runaway, fire, toxic gas release, and chemical spills.

• Implement safeguards for handling flammable electrolytes, heavy metals, and corrosive materials.

• Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

• Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA fire codes, and local environmental regulations.

• Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and permitting requirements.

• Incident Investigation & Emergency Preparedness

• Lead root cause analyses of process incidents (e.g., fires, chemical releases).

• Develop and test emergency response plans for battery-related hazards.

• Coordinate with local fire departments and environmental agencies.

• Training & Awareness

• Train employees on safe handling of lithium-ion batteries, chemical hazards, and emergency response.

• Build awareness of evolving industry standards and best practices.

• Continuous Improvement

• Monitor safety KPIs (incident rates, near misses, audit findings).

• Drive improvements in facility design, ventilation systems, fire suppression, and PPE usage.

• Stay current with innovations in battery recycling technologies and adapt safety practices accordingly.
