Principal Software Engineer (Hybrid - Hartford, Connecticut)

Optomi, in partnership with a leader in the insurance industry, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team supporting enterprise software solutions on the Microsoft technology stack. This is a hands-on leadership role for a technical expert who mentors others, drives architectural strategy, and influences engineering culture and processes. Ideal for a technologist with deep .NET experience, a strong product mindset, and the desire to lead through impact and innovation.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with increasing leadership responsibilities
  • Strong experience in system architecture, distributed systems, and scalable design
  • Proven experience mentoring developers and influencing engineering culture
  • Demonstrated breadth across DevOps, networking, data modeling, and RESTful API development
  • Hands-on experience with debugging, performance tuning, and production support
  • Understanding of CAP theorem, event sourcing, and NoSQL concepts
  • Experience working in or with product teams and contributing to roadmap strategy
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence without authority
  • Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering SRE, ITIL, and Agile SAFe methodologies is a plus
  • Published technical content such as blogs, GitHub, or conference talks is highly desirable
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field (Master’s preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement multi-tiered systems across full-stack environments
  • Lead architectural efforts and align development with business and IT strategy
  • Mentor software engineers and cultivate a culture of craftsmanship and ownership
  • Identify inefficiencies and modernize legacy systems and engineering processes
  • Drive improvements in DevOps, change management, and developer productivity
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices and quality standards
  • Collaborate with architects, product management, and release trains in SAFe
  • Troubleshoot complex system and infrastructure issues
  • Influence product and platform strategy with technical insight and customer focus
  • Contribute to system documentation, estimation, and technical roadmaps
  • Proactively identify technical debt and champion continuous improvement
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing, and innovative engineering environment
