About the Role
Principal, Private Investment Technology | Team: Private Investment Technology | Location: Boston / Needham
Job Overview
Wellington Management is investing heavily in expanding its Private Investments platform, which is one of the firm’s fastest‑growing and most strategic areas. We are seeking a senior‑level Principal Developer to play a critical role in building the technology foundation that will support this growth. This is a unique opportunity to operate at the center of the private investments ecosystem. Unlike many roles that focus on a single function, this position works across the full platform partnering with Investment teams, Fund Control & Operations, Valuation, Legal, Compliance, and Reporting to deliver integrated, end‑to‑end solutions.
As a hands‑on technical leader and architect, you will shape platforms that support the full private investment lifecycle from deal sourcing and execution to portfolio management and operational processes while helping define the next generation of scalable, data‑driven investment infrastructure. You will also play a key role in advancing the firm’s use of AI to enhance engineering productivity and to enable investment and operations teams to work more efficiently and make better decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a senior technical leader and hands‑on architect across private investment platforms.
- Design and deliver scalable, high‑quality systems supporting lifecycle workflows and data integration.
- Lead modernization of existing platforms into modular, service‑oriented architectures.
- Establish and enforce strong engineering standards, SDLC practices, and system observability.
- Lead end‑to‑end delivery of strategic initiatives, from design through production.
- Partner with business stakeholders to translate complex investment workflows into technical solutions.
- Provide technical mentorship through design and code reviews, elevating engineering quality.
- Drive adoption of AI‑assisted development practices (code generation, testing, deployment automation).
- Partner with Investment and Operations teams to identify and implement AI‑driven productivity improvements.
- Demonstrate and evangelize AI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) to improve research, workflows, and reporting.
- Prototype and embed AI‑enabled capabilities into day‑to‑day business processes.
- Act as a change agent to drive adoption of AI across both technical and non‑technical teams.
Key Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience building and supporting complex, business‑critical systems.
- Strong hands‑on development experience (Java, Python, or similar).
- Expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and modern architecture patterns.
- Experience with messaging/streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
- Strong understanding of data integration, system scalability, and production observability.
- Experience in financial services; exposure to private markets or investment platforms preferred.
- Experience using AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, LLM‑based tools).
- Understanding of how AI can improve both engineering productivity and business workflows.
- Proven ability to introduce new technologies and drive adoption across teams.
Key Traits
- Strong technical leadership with a hands‑on mindset.
- Ability to influence both engineering and business stakeholders.
- High ownership, accountability, and execution focus.
- Curiosity and passion for innovation, including AI‑driven transformation.
