Who We Are

Stormentum builds power infrastructure for AI data centers, EV charging, and microgrids. Our patented, modular power electronics architecture merges UPS, battery, and rectifier stages into one platform, from grid to GPU, with fewer conversion stages and more compute from every megawatt. Founded by executives with decades of leadership across technology, wireless, and energy, we’re bringing together world-class engineering talent to rethink how power is delivered.

About the Role

As a Principal Power Electronics Engineer at Stormentum, you'll lead the hardware design and development of our next-generation modular power conversion technology. Your work will help define a highly efficient, scalable power architecture serving some of the most demanding applications in energy infrastructure, including hyperscale data centers, microgrids, and bidirectional EV charging.

You’ll own the design of high-power, high-voltage conversion stages operating at 480 VAC three-phase and VDC, driving critical engineering decisions across topology selection, magnetics, power-stage architecture, and schematic design. You’ll provide technical leadership on PCB layout, component selection, and hardware optimization, taking innovative converter designs from initial concept and prototype validation through qualification and high-volume production.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the selection, design, and development of power conversion stages for Stormentum's Modular Power Electronics Conversion platform, including topology selection, magnetics, and power-stage architecture
  • Own schematic capture for high-power, high-voltage converter hardware and provide hands-on technical direction and review of PCB layout execution
  • Select and qualify power semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN, IGBT) and drive component-level trade-off decisions across efficiency, thermal performance, and cost
  • Develop gate drive and protection circuitry, including fault detection for Si, SiC, and GaN devices
  • Lead EMI/EMC design and compliance activities for grid-connected power electronics hardware
  • Own hardware development from concept through high-volume production, including design for manufacturability, design for test, and compliance testing
  • Lead lab bring-up, testing, and debugging of prototype and production hardware
  • Set technical direction for power electronics design decisions, lead design reviews, and mentor engineers across the hardware team
  • Collaborate closely with the controls, firmware, and systems architecture teams to ensure the power stage design supports system-level performance and certification requirements

What You’ll Bring

  • MS in Electrical Engineering or a similar field (PhD a plus), with extensive experience in end-to-end power electronics product development from concept through commercialization
  • Knowledge of the hardware design and controls for MMC and CHB power electronics topologies
  • 10+ years of experience designing and delivering high-voltage, high-power power electronics converters, with a minimum of 2 full cycles of projects bringing distinct products to market
  • Deep hands-on experience with wide-bandgap semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN), including prior personal ownership of schematic and PCB design
  • Experience with circuit modeling, simulation, and PCB design tools (SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Altium Designer, and HIL platforms such as Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, or dSPACE)
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and grid simulators
  • Strong working knowledge of grid-interconnection and energy storage standards relevant to power conversion hardware (UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, and UL 9540) and the ability to design to those standards, even without having personally owned a certification through completion
  • Experience with processes similar to those outlined in UL 1998, UL 991, and IEC 61508
  • Experience designing to IEC 62477-1, including insulation coordination, creepage, and clearance for high-voltage hardware

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • Familiarity with Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) or solid-state transformers
  • Direct experience owning a product through UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, or UL 9540 certification end-to-end, including engagement with a 3rd-party certification lab
  • Familiarity with UL 62368-1, 1973 and NFPA 855
  • Familiarity with international grid standards including CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 and EN 50549
  • Experience in volume manufacturing environments, including design for cost optimization, yield improvement, and supplier engagement
  • Background in grid-tied inverter systems, energy storage, or utility-scale power conversion or data center power systems
