Principal Mechanical Engineer

We are actively seeking a Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer in Burlington, MA. This role will be responsible for architecting, designing, building, and scaling complex custom manufacturing equipment and vehicle-related mechanical systems.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of custom manufacturing equipment across multiple process steps.
• Develop first-of-kind equipment concepts and detailed mechanical designs.
• Evaluate and execute build-versus-buy decisions based on technical, economic, scalability, and lifecycle considerations.
• Translate process engineering requirements into mechanical system designs.
• Develop equipment solutions that enable new manufacturing process capabilities.
• Define and manage system requirements, interfaces, and downstream design impacts.
• Lead structured technical reviews and stage-gate activities.
• Develop prototypes and execute rapid design, test, and iteration cycles.
• Define equipment architectures supporting automation, reliability, maintainability, and facility expansion.
• Apply thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, controls, materials, and machine design principles to equipment development.
• Establish engineering standards for CAD, documentation, equipment design, and commissioning.
• Support equipment build, integration, validation, and production deployment.
• Develop technical documentation, design records, and review packages.
• Support expansion of mechanical engineering and equipment development capabilities.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of experience designing and building complex equipment or vehicle systems.
• Advanced CAD experience.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T.
• Strong knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
• Experience leading structured stage-gated Systems Engineering Technical Reviews (SETR) or similar technical review processes.
• Experience supporting accelerated product or equipment development timelines.
• Knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
• Knowledge of mechanics, dynamics, and machine design.
• Knowledge of control systems and basic programming.
• Knowledge of materials science, including metals, polymers, and ceramics.
• Knowledge of fracture mechanics, surface engineering, and wetting.
• Experience developing linked system requirements and managing technical interfaces.

Preferred Skills

• Experience making build-versus-buy decisions for equipment and subsystems.
• Experience developing equipment architectures for automation and scale-up.
• Experience supporting prototype, test, validation, and commissioning activities.
• Experience with equipment reliability and maintainability design.
• Experience establishing CAD standards, engineering documentation practices, and equipment development processes.
• Experience integrating mechanical systems with controls, automation, and process equipment.
