MW Talent is partnering with a global materials and technology organization to identify a Power Transformer Application Engineer based in Richmond, Virginia.
This position requires practical knowledge of dry-type transformer technology, particularly VPI transformers and their insulation systems. Candidates with primarily liquid-filled transformer experience may also be considered if they can demonstrate a strong working knowledge of dry-type technologies, insulation systems, material selection, and relevant technical standards.
This is a customer-facing opportunity for a transformer engineer who wants to move beyond a traditional design role and work directly with transformer manufacturers, engineering teams, and customers.
The preferred work arrangement is hybrid in Richmond, with relocation assistance available for qualified candidates. Exceptional candidates located outside Virginia who do not wish to relocate may be considered for a remote arrangement.
The successful candidate will support transformer applications, influence technical design decisions, solve customer challenges, deliver technical presentations, and identify new opportunities across North America.

What You Will Do:
- Work directly with transformer design engineers, manufacturers, utilities, consultants, and customers
- Support the selection and application of transformer insulation systems
- Serve as a technical resource for dry-type transformer applications, particularly VPI systems, while also supporting liquid-filled, distribution, and power transformer applications.
- Review customer specifications, technical drawings, testing data, and application requirements
- Participate in design reviews, product qualifications, and testing discussions
- Provide technical guidance related to transformer design, insulation, performance, and manufacturing
- Help customers resolve technical challenges and improve product performance
- Support root-cause investigations and recommend practical solutions
- Partner with sales, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations teams
- Develop strong, lasting customer relationships
- Identify market trends and new application opportunities
- Represent the organization at industry events, technical forums, standards groups, and conferences
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations to customers, engineering teams, and large audiences
- Speak confidently at conferences and events with audiences of up to 500 people
- Travel throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and occasionally Europe to support customers and attend industry events
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field
- At least three years of transformer design, application engineering, product engineering, manufacturing, testing, or technical support experience
- Direct experience with dry-type transformer technology, including VPI transformer applications
- Working knowledge of dry-type transformer insulation systems, insulation materials, resin systems, and relevant UL requirements
- Ability to explain the technical differences between VPI, cast-resin, and liquid-filled transformer technologies
- Strong understanding of how transformers are designed, manufactured, tested, and operated
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, customer specifications, testing data, and application requirements
- Customer-facing experience with manufacturers, utilities, consultants, or engineering teams
- Strong technical presentation and relationship-building skills
- Ability to translate complex technical information for both technical and commercial audiences
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple customer priorities
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 35%
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship
- Hands-on dry-type transformer design or application engineering
- VPI transformer manufacturing, testing, or technical support
- Cast-resin transformer technology
- Dry-type insulation-system design and material selection
- Aramid paper, resin systems, and related electrical insulation materials
- UL certification requirements for dry-type transformers
- IEEE C57, IEC 60076, UL, and related transformer standards
- Customer design reviews, technical proposals, product qualifications, testing, and failure analysis
- Experience delivering technical presentations or participating in industry conferences, technical forums, or standards groups
- Existing relationships with transformer manufacturers, utilities, consultants, or engineering firms
- You are a technically strong transformer engineer
- You are customer-focused and enjoy developing professional relationships
- You communicate complex technical information clearly
- You feel comfortable presenting to large groups and participating in conferences
- You understand how design decisions affect manufacturing, testing, reliability, and performance
