Postdoctoral researcher – University of Delaware

Overview

A postdoctoral researcher position is available at the School of Marine Science and Policy, University of Delaware. The postdoctoral researcher will undertake an investigation of the role that the ocean plays in glacier retreat along the west Antarctic Peninsula shelf. The project focuses on understanding heat transport processes across the shelf and their impact on ice melt, using historical data and newly-developed high-resolution models of the shelf and adjacent glacier fjords. The project is part of a collaborative effort with scientists at University of Oregon, Old Dominion University, and University of South Florida. The position is based at the Newark campus with opportunities to interact with scientists at both Newark and Lewes campuses.

Responsibilities

• Investigate the role of the ocean in glacier retreat along the west Antarctic Peninsula shelf.
• Understand heat transport processes across the shelf and their impact on ice melt.
• Use a combination of historical data and high-resolution model output to address research questions.
• Collaborate with scientists at University of Oregon, Old Dominion University, and University of South Florida.

Qualifications

• PhD in physical oceanography, glaciology, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience in observations and/or model output analysis.
• Strong quantitative and writing skills.
• Expertise in polar systems is preferred.

Details

• One-year appointment, with renewal for a second year contingent upon performance and funding.
• Location: Newark campus, with interaction across Newark and Lewes campuses.
