Police Officer

Police Officers preserve public peace; protect life and property; work within the community to prevent crime and enforce the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin.

Essential functions include safely carrying, maintaining, and operating issued firearms and other police equipment; enforcing the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin; responding to calls for service; conducting investigations of suspicious persons or situations and preliminary investigation of major crimes and criminal activity; preparing investigative reports; identifying, detaining, and processing wanted individuals; interviewing suspects and witnesses; preparing for and testifying in court as to the facts surrounding any criminal, departmental or civil action; patrolling the City of Brookfield in a police vehicle and/or on foot as directed; preparing accurate and complete reports of daily activities; providing assistance to the community in the areas of crime prevention; enforcing motor vehicle laws to promote safety and to reduce accidents and expedite traffic flow; and attending in-service training as mandated by the State of Wisconsin or as directed.

Minimum requirements include being at least 18 years old at the time of application, United States citizenship, a valid Wisconsin driver's license at the time of background investigation and throughout employment, an Associate Degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state, or a minimum of 60 college level credits from an accredited college or university, and meeting physical readiness standards including a 1.5 mile run in 16.57 minutes, 23 push ups, a vertical jump of 14 inches, a 300m run in 68 seconds, 30 sit ups, and an agility run in 19.5 seconds.

Required knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics include the ability to read, understand, and explain City of Brookfield ordinances and Wisconsin Statutes; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population, in-person, via telephone and in writing; ability to use language in writing to communicate information or ideas, using logical organization, clear expression, proper sentence structure and appropriate grammar and vocabulary; ability to write accurate and complete reports, to record information or ideas, using logical organization, clear expression, proper sentence structure and appropriate grammar and vocabulary; ability to write accurate and complete reports, to record information by hand and by computer, to file records and to process paperwork; ability to interact constructively and productively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public; ability to consistently display civil and courteous conduct and a customer-service orientation; ability to memorize and retain new information including names, faces, vehicles, geographic locations, maps and patrol patterns; ability to identify, critically evaluate and resolve a problem or issue; ability to make quick and appropriate decisions in stressful situations; ability to maintain self-control and to take direction from supervisors; positive attitude and good work habits; and good moral character; honest, responsible and trustworthy.

Disqualifiers include having been convicted of a felony, having been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Military Service, having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, having been prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm for any reason. Any willful misrepresentation in regard to any material fact shall be sufficient cause for exclusion from the selection process or for removal of name from the eligible list or for discharge.

The salary range is $37.82-$49.76 with annual increases based upon successful job performance. The City offers a generous benefit package, as negotiated with the Brookfield Professional Police Association. New employees that have continuous, full-time, sworn law enforcement experience may begin employment at a step in the range and vacation accrual that is commensurate with their years of experience serving in a sworn police officer position.

The selection process will be job-related and will consist of a written examination, oral examination and department ride along evaluation for selected candidates after the oral interview process. Candidates who successfully pass all selection tests, in addition to the background examination, and are offered employment will be required to take a medical examination, drug screen, and psychological examination as a condition of hire. Training academy designees will also be required to pass a physical agility test. Candidates must successfully complete all components of the selection process in order to be hired. Failing any component will be cause for removal from the selection process. The eligible list created as a result of this selection process may be supplemented with additional candidates and test iterations - you may test for this position once per year and your score will remain in effect for up to one year.

Candidates who will be unavailable for one or more portions of the examination due to military service or training must provide written notification to the Human Resources Department within a reasonable period of time prior to the date of the examination component. Any applicant not appointed to the title of Police Officer may submit another application no sooner than twelve (12) months from the original date of a previous application. Veterans' preference points will be awarded in accordance with current State Statutes and Commission rules. Veterans' preference points will be awarded only to qualified applications who submit their DD214 at the time of application.
