Police Major

Highly responsible supervisory police work in directing other police employees in patrol or investigative activities or responsible police work in the performance of specialized and technical police functions.

Staff supervision; directly supervises lieutenants, sergeants, unit and/or division commanders; may serve as unit or division commander; inspects areas to determine effectiveness of police officers.

Assist personnel and other subordinate officers in effecting assignment; designs and implements special programs as directed by the Chief of Police, or superior officer.

Prepares evidence and investigation reports; assists, counsels, and advises subordinate officers; coordinates and directs the surveillance of suspected criminals.

Affects the arrest and apprehension of criminals; participates in special investigative assignments related to narcotics, vice, homicide, etc.

Performs duties and assignments in coordination with Federal, state, county, and other law enforcement agencies.

Assists in the screening and evaluation of complaints from the public, in requests for information and assistance, and in the direction of police personnel assigned to these functions.

Performs various technical and staff functions.

Evaluates subordinate employees; prepares reports and maintains records; develops and coordinates police training procedures; participates in budget planning and preparation; performs other duties as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Considerable knowledge of departmental operating procedures and limitations upon departmental authority.

Considerable knowledge of city, county, Federal, and state laws and ordinances pertaining to criminal and related violations.

Considerable knowledge of methods of preserving evidence and what constitutes admissible evidence.

Skill in the use and care of firearms and other equipment used by the department in accomplishing its mission.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, other employees, and the general public, considerable knowledge of research methodology, data collection, and statistical procedures.

Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.

Ability to exercise unusually good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police science, criminology, or a related field.

Considerable supervisory police experience in the prevention of crime, protection of life and property, investigation of crime, documentation of evidence, and apprehension of criminal offenders; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license and must be currently certified as a police officer by the State of Florida. Must possess extensive experience working Internal Affairs cases internally and with external agencies as a detective and supervisor.

On a continuous basis sit at a desk and/or stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to walk. Frequently required to see, hear, and talk with employees and the public. Frequently required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means, use a calculator to compute figures. On occasion it is requested to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment. On occasion it is required to lift or carry weights up to 20 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
