About the Position

The City of Giddings is seeking an experienced, ethical, strategic, and community-minded law enforcement leader to serve as Police Chief. The Chief is the chief administrative officer of the Police Department and oversees all department personnel and operations, including animal control.

The Chief sets a high standard for professionalism, builds strong public relations, and works closely with other City departments and outside agencies to keep Giddings safe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and manage all Police Department activities, including policies, procedures, training, and short- and long-range strategic plans
  • Prepare and manage the department budget, with final authority over budget requests and compliance for budgeted and forfeited funds and equipment
  • Supervise all department employees directly or through subordinate supervisors; handle hiring, evaluations, complaints, and discipline as approved by the City Manager
  • Develop police managers by delegating authority and encouraging cooperation with other agencies, community groups, and the media
  • Direct animal control operations, including adoption programs for impounded animals
  • Coordinate with other departments and jurisdictions, including negotiating and overseeing mutual aid and interlocal agreements
  • Prepare reports for the City Council and City Manager
  • Occasionally perform patrol duties, including responding to calls, investigating offenses and accidents, and making arrests
  • Remain on call after hours, with a response time of no more than 30 minutes

$110,000.00 – $120,000.00 Exempt City Manager October 30, 2026

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Five or more years of experience as a Police Chief, Assistant Police Chief, Captain, or Lieutenant, or a combination of these (comparable county, state, or federal experience may be considered)
  • TCOLE Master Peace Officer Certification, or an equivalent from another state or the federal government (TCOLE certification must then be obtained within 12 months of hire)
  • Completion of IC 100, 200, 700, and 800; IC 300 and 400 must be completed within 12 months of appointment
  • Valid Texas Class C driver's license
  • Ability to lift up to 200 pounds on an infrequent basis and to work outdoors occasionally

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field
  • Graduate of the FBI National Academy, LEMIT Leadership Command College, or similar advanced law enforcement management training

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Extensive knowledge of law enforcement, crime prevention, and investigative practices
  • Strong leadership, personnel management, budgeting, and public relations skills
  • Sound judgment, discretion with confidential information, and a professional demeanor under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work extended hours for council and board meetings, and to travel for training and conferences
