Podiatrist

Job Summary

Podiatrist will provide foot care and podiatric services in a clinic-based setting. This will include performing physical exams, assessing feet, diagnosing problems, prescribing medications, surgery as needed, special shoe inserts, and utilizing x-rays and laboratory tests. Ideal candidates should be Board Qualified/Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (Forefoot) or the American Board of Podiatry Medicine. Candidates must demonstrate compassion, attention to detail, and thrive in a collaborative environment.

Essential Functions

• Provides comprehensive assessment of patients to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related leg structures.
• Counsels and educates patients, families, communities, staff, and others regarding health care.
• Reviews past history and performs diagnostic tests and examinations as needed to establish diagnoses.
• Identifies individuals at high risk for lower extremity amputations.
• Performs clinical procedures such as nail avulsions, wound debridement, and minor biopsies.
• Performs routine preventive foot care including debridement of toenails and calluses.
• Recognizes rare and difficult-to-identify symptoms or signs and develops a full regimen involving advanced techniques.
• Maintains clinical and administrative records as required.

Required Experience and Skills

• Four (4) years of podiatric practice or equivalent; one year in a multidisciplinary clinical setting; two years of approved residency training or equivalent acceptable to the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association, and applicable specialty board acceptable in lieu of four years of practice, including the one‑year requirement.
• Possesses stature warranting appointment at clinical instructor or higher level at a school or college of podiatry or other appropriate affiliated school or college.
• Achieves a high level of professional attainment, such as being a recognized expert in difficult cases referred by other facilities, consulting with other health professionals, or having assumed responsibility for a comprehensive podiatry program for diabetic, peripheral vascular disease, and geriatric care.
• Demonstrates high competence and skill in responding to patient needs through program development and innovative methods.
• Participates in training or research activities of considerable scope within podiatry or related fields.
• Retains current CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network.
• Proficient in spoken and written English.

Required Education

• Doctor of Podiatric Medicine or equivalent from a school approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; approved U.S. schools are those approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year the degree was granted.
• Licensed to practice podiatry in New York; full and unrestricted licensure with current registration in the state of licensure is required.
• Completion of residency training or equivalent approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification eligibility.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

• Moderate physical activity: handling objects up to 25 pounds, standing and walking for more than four hours per day.
• Work typically performed in an interior office environment.
• Ready to respond to any medical emergency within the clinic, potentially requiring rapid movement to provide assistance.
