Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
- Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine, obtained from a VA‑approved school during the year of completion
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
- Residency training: physicians must have completed a VA‑approved accredited core specialty training program that leads to board‑certification, OR one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice, OR non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
- PRPs (Physician Resident Providers) may be appointed on an intermittent basis under specific conditions and are not considered independent practitioners.

Duties
- Open continuous announcement; remains open until October 1 2026
- Initial referral cut‑off date: July , with subsequent cut‑offs on the 1st of each month
- Eligible applications received after the cut‑off dates will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur, on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled

- Operate as a Urologic Staff Surgeon in the Surgical Care Service at Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS), performing outpatient and inpatient urologic surgery examinations, diagnoses, and treatment based on standards of care
- Diagnose and treat medical and surgical disorders, conduct evaluations and work‑ups, admit urologic surgery patients as needed
- Perform clinical duties in the operating room, inpatient rounds, emergency department, and outpatient clinics, including a wide variety of urologic surgical procedures (cystoscopy, fiberoptic cystoscopy, etc.)
- May supervise residents and medical students rotating through the service
- Participate in urologic surgery night‑call and perform emergency procedures
- Provide patient education regarding disease state and treatment regimens
- Complete electronic clinical daily charting and documentation in a timely manner
- Consult with Medical Center staff on patient care issues
- Other duties as assigned
