Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Alternative residency pathways:
  • (1) Certified by ACGME or AOA in an accredited program as listed in the year the residency was completed.
  • (2) One year of post‑medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice.
  • (3) Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. with a related license.
  • PRPs (Physician Resident Providers) are eligible under certain conditions and must be fully licensed physicians, not training licenses, and will have a scope of practice for supervised duties.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board certified in Psychiatry.

Duties and Benefits

  • Provide psychiatric care in the outpatient Mental Health Clinic for the VA Maine Healthcare System.
  • Serve the Mental Health Service at the Togus campus and Community‑Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Bangor, Portland, Rumford, Calais, Lincoln, Lewiston‑Auburn, Presque Island, and other locations.
  • Deliver services including the Mental Health Clinic, a 20‑bed (potentially 24‑bed) locked inpatient unit, a PTSD program, an addiction services program, an Integrated Primary Care (PCMHI) team, Mental Health Intensive Case Management (ICMHR) team, a psychology training program with interns and post‑doctoral residents, and Compensation & Pension mental health evaluations.
  • Participate in the tele‑mental health program and collaborative research projects with other research sites.
  • Work schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Bargaining Unit: AFGE.
  • Salary: Competitive with annual performance bonus; regular salary increases.
  • Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME).
  • Retirement: Traditional federal pension (vests after 5 years) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions.
  • Health Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care (many programs carry into retirement).
  • Licensure requirement: One full, unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.

  • No physician employment contract; no significant restriction on moonlighting.
