Physician - Primary Care (EDRP Authorized)

Summary

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications and subsequent cut‑off dates are on the first of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) indicated in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy).
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (Options: a) accredited residency ACGME/AOA; b) one year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice; c) non‑US residency followed by minimum three years of independent practice in the U.S.).
• Residents in accredited residency programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under specific conditions.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Vision, color vision, hearing or speech may be required depending on specific duties.

Preferred Experience

• Board‑certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and/or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
• One year of primary care experience providing comprehensive primary care—including the full scope of women’s health services.

Duties

• Primary responsibility is to provide primary care services for a panel of 1,250 patients.
• Perform exams according to performance guidelines and procedures and dictate/type notes according to policy/procedure.
• Screen patients, determine need for further care, evaluate unscheduled patients, order diagnostic studies, carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities, initiate and expedite requests for consultations, and schedule special tests and studies.
• Physician may be on rotation to do extended hours once per month or less.

• Adhere to operational policies and procedures for the primary care team established by the primary care service line manager.
• Facilitate liaisons with other health care programs to coordinate service.
• Comply with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders and encounters for all patients.
• Comply with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards and proper patient check‑out procedures.
• Attend meetings held by the Service Line Manager (or designee) and facility Director, Service Line Staff meetings, Clinic Team meetings, and primary care service line peer review procedures.
• Work effectively with team members to facilitate care, including timely completion of medical forms and responses to patient complaints and other administrative duties.
• Maintain current BLS certification and complete mandatory educational classes.
• Participate in the peer review process.
• Assist with nursing protocol agreements ensuring the agreements meet accepted medical standards for prescribing privileges.

• Academic/teaching/training opportunities are available at several clinics with residents and/or medical students.

• Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (subject to change based on the needs of the agency).
