Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility requirements and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
  • Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine
  • Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency training: completion of an ACGME or AOA‑approved accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or equivalent programs as detailed below
  • OR one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or first year of residency or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the United States
  • OR non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States under a full and unrestricted license, with duties related to the position
  • Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis only, with limited scope of practice under supervision
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred experience: board‑certified or board‑eligible
  • Physical requirements: ability to perform essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without hazard to themselves or others

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages chronic conditions, evaluates and treats inter‑current medical conditions, and determines medical assessments and develops treatment plans according to accepted protocols
  • Collaborates with the Patient Aligned Care Team to provide accessible, comprehensive, coordinated, continuous care to an assigned panel of patients
  • Provides comprehensive gender‑specific care for female veterans as a Women’s Health PCP, including age‑appropriate cervical and breast cancer screening, menopause and contraceptive management, and initial evaluation of basic gynecological concerns
  • Performs a variety of disease prevention activities, including gender‑ and age‑specific screenings, mental health screenings, and health promotion activities
  • Screens for, evaluates, and treats uncomplicated common mental health disorders, including depression and common addictions, with referrals to mental health providers as appropriate
  • Provides buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder per DEA guidance
  • Supervises or collaborates with primary‑care mid‑level providers and acts as surrogate for absent primary‑care providers when needed, including review of CPRS view alerts
  • Attends primary‑care staff meetings, departmental meetings, and medical staff meetings regularly
  • Documents encounters and notes timely in accordance with facility policy; completes all administrative work promptly
  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; schedule subject to change based on facility needs
