Summary

The Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center is recruiting for one Neurologist to perform duties at the VA hospital in Spokane, WA. A recruitment/relocation incentive has been authorized for this position and may be offered to a highly qualified candidate. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)—a student‑loan payment reimbursement program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) : Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the study was completed.
  • Full and unrestricted license : Must hold a current license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training : Must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program that leads to eligibility for board certification. Options include:
    • Residency approved by ACGME or AOA.
    • One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice.
    • Non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of independent practice in the United States.
  • Residents currently enrolled in an accredited program and who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Completion of an ABPN‑approved fellowship program in Neurology.

Duties

  • Perform comprehensive clinical, consultative, and leadership functions related to neurological care.
  • Diagnose and manage a variety of neurology disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients with neurological disorders.
  • Provide consultations and expert guidance to other healthcare providers on neurology cases.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary based on clinical findings and diagnostic results.
  • Educate healthcare staff on best practices for neurological prevention and control.
  • Engage in clinical research and quality improvement projects to advance understanding and treatment of neurological disorders.
  • Implement evidence‑based practices and contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Participate in staff meetings, hospital committees, and the peer review process.
  • Maintain VA training requirements and timely documentation for privileging and re‑privileging.
  • Participate in the Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE)/Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) process.
  • Adhere to employee health requirements and participate in Clinical Pertinence Reviews, providing patient care—direct or virtual—that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with neurological disorders using standard methods and techniques.
  • Interpret EEG recordings and produce reports (desired but not required).
  • Perform electro‑diagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies and EMGs) and dictate interpretations.
  • Cooperate with and participate in quality‑of‑care activities such as peer review and performance improvement.
  • Attend assigned meetings or process action teams.
  • Conduct thorough history taking, physical examination, test interpretation, patient counseling, and differential diagnosis for neurological conditions.
  • Collaborate with health‑team members to facilitate positive patient‑care outcomes.
  • Demonstrate leadership within interdisciplinary teams and foster collaborative decision making.
  • Order, interpret, and utilize laboratory, radiologic, and other diagnostic studies to guide clinical management.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions.
  • Provide comprehensive patient and family education regarding neurological disorders and treatment plans.
  • Engage in practice‑based learning and improvement using scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.
