The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center announce opportunities for Palliative Medicine Physicians to join our expanding team within the Division of Palliative Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine. Academic rank and track are commensurate with academic record and experience.

The position involves implementation of a combined mHealth-telehealth symptom intervention for people with advanced cancer as well as brief telehealth intervention for people with pancreatic cancer. Other behavioral symptom management projects are available; prior training in chronic pain, sleep medicine, and evidence-based wellness and psychological interventions (CBT-ACT) is preferable. The Psychologist will assist with basic statistical analyses as well as manuscript and grant development and will supervise and mentor junior research staff on multiple studies.

Duties And Responsibilities

Faculty responsibilities are aligned with patient care, education, and clinical research. The psychologist will provide professional telehealth support for mHealth and web-based interventions for people with cancer. They may also provide clinical intervention for other studies as part of the Center for Research Excellence in Supportive Care. They will perform statistical analyses and will have opportunities to contribute to training, research, and other scholarly pursuits.

The position requires broad knowledge of psychosocial oncology, DSM-5 diagnosis, psychosocial palliative medicine interventions, and basic research methods and statistics. Other duties include representing the program or Department by participating in conferences and representing OSU at professional meetings and community speaking engagements. The psychologist is expected to practice within the established Medical Center standards of practice and adhere to key results areas of the Medical Center.

The Palliative Medicine team cares for seriously ill patients across the illness trajectory. Our areas of expertise include palliative care in cancer, heart failure, advanced lung disease, transplant, ICU, neurologic conditions, geriatrics, and advanced liver disease. We educate trainees and practicing clinicians on primary palliative care principles from multiple disciplines and subspecialties. Our program includes five ACGME-accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship positions (Adult, combined Adult/Pediatric, and combined Oncology/Palliative Medicine track).

Research initiatives center on palliative care delivery, symptom management, and implementation science in cancer, organ transplant, and substance use disorder, supported by internal and extramural funding. Research topics include models of palliative care delivery, cancer symptom management in substance use disorder, digital health interventions for symptom monitoring and management, and cognitive assessment for older adults with cancer.

Requirements

• Successful completion of an APA-accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology and an APA-accredited internship
• Post-doctoral fellowship training in a healthcare or medical setting is preferred
• Knowledge of actigraphy and/or psychoneuroimmunology is preferred
• Licensure in the state of Ohio
• Previous work in an academic medical center
• Faculty rank will be in accordance with candidate’s qualifications

Faculty Defined

Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Individuals with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical, and professor-clinical. They hold an MD, DO, PhD, or other terminal degree. Clinical faculty are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years, with potential reappointment. They focus on clinical care and may include teaching and/or research.

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Individuals with titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor eligible for tenure or who have tenure. They have a doctorate (PhD), MD, DO, or MD/PhD and focus on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD/DO degrees may also be involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Individuals with titles such as research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. They hold a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree and focus on research; not eligible for tenure.
