Physician (Hospitalist Part-Time) with EDRP

Overview

The Amarillo VA Health Care System – Amarillo – Texas is seeking a part‑time Physician (Hospitalist) to manage admissions, discharges, daily follow‑up and consultative Medicare for hospital patients. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States citizenship
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an allopathic or osteopathic program approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs
• Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
• Residency training: completion of an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs that leads to eligibility for board certification
• Residency or fellowship must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
• One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S. is acceptable for those with non‑U.S. residency training
• Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. is acceptable
• Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred Experience:

• Board certified in Internal Medicine
• At least 2 years of hospitalist experience
• Internal Medicine resident teaching experience
• Additional experience as appropriate per the position:

Physical Requirements:

• Light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds)
• Use of fingers, walking, standing, both legs required
• Specific visual ability to see a computer screen
• Hearing (a hearing aid is permitted)

Responsibilities

• The Staff Hospitalist will support the medical staff in the clinical practice managing inpatients
• Evaluate patients by thoroughly examining them
• Obtain appropriate clinical, laboratory, and other pertinent data to determine the care to be provided
• Interpret and evaluate clinical data for diagnosing and assessing clinical status
• Prescribe appropriate and timely treatment
• Apply indicated therapeutic procedures
• Recognize and assess changes in symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts, and modify the plan of treatment when indicated
• Recognize own capabilities and limitations
• Be readily available and quick to recognize emergency situations, taking timely necessary action
• Maintain BLS/ACLS certification as required by bylaws
• Develop and maintain rapport, gaining the confidence of patients and relatives through competence and interpersonal skills so that patients and others are informed participants in the treatment effort
• Recognize the need for consultation and utilize facility or clinic specialty skills in diagnosis and treatment
• Promptly and completely document examinations, status changes, and progress notes, orders, and treatments
• Unusual incidents are promptly reported to the appropriate official
• Maintain clear, accurate, and adequate clinical records, completed at the time of discharge
• Clearly state the treatment plan
• Be fully knowledgeable of and utilize the Computerized Patient Record System
• Complete and sign all progress notes and orders daily
• Educational responsibilities include teaching or coordination, or both, depending on the position
• Serve as a mentor or teacher for residents, trainees, or employees, developing educational activities and guiding learning experiences
• Encourage active student participation and solicit evaluation of teaching and educational experiences
• Ensure educational content is based on patient and learning needs, up‑to‑date, and at an appropriate level for the audience
• Develop courses, lectures, or programs based on established objectives, employing appropriate learning resources and media
• Assess educational needs for both continuing and basic education programs, using audits, self‑assessment surveys, morbidity and mortality data, and new healthcare developments
• Establish procedures for professionals to self‑assess and partake in needs assessments, selecting the most cost‑effective education/training interventions

Work Schedule and Compensation

Part‑time. Compensation includes a competitive salary, an annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, eleven federal holidays, and up to 5 days for CME). Retirement benefits include a traditional federal pension (5 years vesting), a federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, and federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance (many programs may be carried into retirement). Licensure: one full and unrestricted U.S. state or territory license. Medical coverage provided depends on full‑time status and board certification.
