The staff Gynecologic Surgeon routinely performs outpatient and inpatient Gynecology surgery examinations, determines diagnoses, and initiates treatments based on Gynecologic surgery education and standards of care.

Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent allopathic or osteopathic medicine degree from a school approved by the VA for the year the course was completed.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification eligibility.
  • Accepted residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs, one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
  • Residents in accredited programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis.
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, perform duties under supervision, and are not independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board certification in the Specialty/Sub‑Specialty listed in the announcement.

Duties

  • This is a continuous announcement that will remain open until September 3 - 2026.
  • Initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications is June 30 - 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates on the 1st of each month.
  • Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur.
  • Diagnose and treat medical and surgical disorders using the most appropriate techniques to provide quality care.
  • Responsible for initial evaluation, workups—including history & physical—and admission of Gynecologic surgery patients as needed.
  • Clinical duties include operating room (wide variety of standard Gynecologic surgical procedures: hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, vaginal, and open abdominal), inpatient rounds, emergency room, Women’s Health, and outpatient clinics.
  • Must be able to perform a wide variety of Gynecologic surgical procedures and, where desired, be skilled in minimally invasive modalities.
  • The DaVinci robotic platform is available for use.
  • May supervise residents from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology—University of Arizona College of Medicine (Phoenix)—the Mayo Clinic, and other training programs, as well as medical students from the University of Arizona and residents who rotate through the Gynecologic Surgery Service.
  • Will participate in Gynecology night and weekend call and perform emergency surgical procedures.
  • Responsible for providing patients with education concerning their disease state and treatment regimen.
  • Complete all electronic‑clinical daily charting and documentation required by the Medical Center in a timely manner, including outcomes reporting.
  • Consult with Medical Center staff on many patient care issues.
  • Maintain clinical privileges as a member of the Medical Staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm; night and weekend on‑call and after‑hours duties as assigned.
