Physician (Dermatologist)

Summary

Northport VA Medical Center is seeking a part-time Board Certified Physician (Dermatologist). This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Completion of an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME accredited programs; (2) AOA accredited programs; (3) Other non-US residency programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
• Physician Resident Providers (PRPs): Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as PRPs.
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
• PRPs must have a scope of practice allowing them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
• In addition, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Duties

• Provide direct hands‑on patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings using evidence‑based medicine.
• Assess patients for acute illnesses.
• Manage chronic and acute dermatologic diseases, including prescribing appropriate medications.
• Evaluate and treat inpatient and outpatient consults.
• Supervise and teach dermatology residents in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
• Oversee mid‑level practitioners such as nurse practitioners to ensure the highest quality of dermatologic care for veterans.
• Conduct periodic assessment of staff and resident proficiencies.
• Perform outpatient dermatologic procedures and oversee resident participation, including cryosurgery, intralesional injections, skin biopsies, simple excisions and closures, electrodessication, and curettage.
• Possess experience and interest in performing light treatments such as narrow‑band UVB, patch testing, photodynamic therapy, botulinum toxin injections for hyperhidrosis, and chemical peels.
• Participate in academic activities, including supervision of dermatology residents from Stony Brook University and teaching medical students.
• Provide teledermatology services primarily via VA Video Connect and other mobile applications as needed.
• Collaborate effectively within the Division of Dermatology and the wider Northport VAMC community.
• Demonstrate outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Provide appropriate patient and family member teaching and education.
• Use the Computer Patient Records System (CPRS) for entering and signing consultations, progress notes, and medical orders.
• Complete consultations and progress notes with accurate coding of encounters in a timely manner.
• Ensure accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
• Maintain familiarity with and compliance to hospital infection prevention policies and procedures.
• Follow up with patients and communicate test results in a timely fashion.
• Offer clinical guidance over the phone and via Secure Messaging as needed.
• Participate in accreditation requirements, quality improvement programs, chart reviews, and peer reviews.
• Consult with other specialists when their expertise is needed for diagnoses, treatments, or procedures.
• Inform patients of required consults.
